Hyundai Ioniq hybrid will be making its way into India. This will be the company’s first hybrid vehicle for India. Hyundai has plans to launch eight new vehicles by 2020, of these three shall be all new products, while the rest will be new-generation models. The Ioniq is a hybrid car that has been introduced globally to compete with the Toyota Prius. The Japanese hybrid car is already made available in India.

Hyundai Ioniq hybrid will be unveiled at the 2018 Auto Expo, as confirmed by the company’s MD and CEO Y K Koo. Hyundai will be the third auto maker to get a proper hybrid after Toyota and Honda. With the new government schemes like FAME and NEMMP for hybrid and electric vehicles, the automakers have been encouraged to look at getting more green vehicles to India. In fact even car makers like Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra have been working on soft hybrid technology like start-stop to reduce the emissions.

The new hybrid vehicle shall be showcased at 2018 Auto Expo and will be launched by mid 2018. The new Ioniq will be priced similar to the Prius.

We reckon the pricing of the Hyundai Ioniq hybrid should be about INR 38-45 lakhs (on-road). It will be coming to India by the CBU route. An all new product for the Indian car market.

Hyundai Ioniq hybrid Exterior

The new-generation Fluidic Sculpture design has been integrated into the Ioniq. This doesn’t just look stylish, but even futuristic. The hexagonal front grille is an evolution of the existing styling characters. The headlamp seems to be well chiselled and the daytime running LEDs do stand out. The headlamps are all LED too.

The side profile is more like a notchback.

Just like what the Prius has on offer. At the same time, Hyundai has made the design highly aerodynamic. The Ioniq has a co-efficient of drag of 0.24. This is what makes it more efficient. There are 16-inch wheels that have low rolling resistance too.

The same Hyundai charm is carried into the interiors as well. A highly sophisticated black interior trim with smoothly flowing design. There are a lot of gizmos in the vehicle, we aren’t certain on how of them shall make it into the Indian cars. A touchscreen system with an advanced instrument cluster system. There is Apple CarPlay, Android AUto on offer. Then there is wireless smartphone charging as well. The other features include blind spot detection, lane change assist etc.

A 1.6-litre petrol engine has been plonked into the sedan. It has a maximum power of 165bhp and comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. A 8.9kWh electric motor comes connected with this engine.

The lithium battery pack to power the electric motor. This produces 50bhp and has a range of about 50kms. This makes it a good enough option to consider for daily driving. The Hyundai Ioniq comes as regular hybrid and even plug-in hybrid.

We don’t think the plug-in hybrid might come to India.
