Peugeot India had a plan to make a comeback on its own as they were planning to invest about 600 million euros in Gujarat. The cash crunch back then meant that the company cancelled all its plans to make for the Indian car market. The French automaker has now finalised that it will be setting up its shop for the Indian car market. As per the company’s plan, they are looking growing by about 50% till 2021.

Peugeot India car launches

At the moment, it is a bit too early to state anything on this. However, we reckon Peugeot India will be looking at getting the 208 and the 301 (Honda City competition), from what we understand. Looking at its French rival, Renault, Peugeot India will be looking at getting a highly localised car that will  make them competitive. In the initial stage they will come up with only two cars, we reckon.

Peugeot India plant in India

Hindustan Motors already has a plant in Chennai. This is where the new Peugeots will be manufactured. The French automaker is looking at using their existing plant set-up to reduce their investments. Later on, maybe they would move on to their own plant. This is something that even Isuzu is doing. In the initial days, they were manufacturing the D-MAX pick-ups in Chennai and now it is Andhra Pradesh.

As part of the first agreement, the PSA Group will hold a majority stake in the joint-venture company being set-up with HMFCL for the assembly and distribution of PSA passenger cars in India. As per the second agreement, a 50:50 joint-venture is being set-up between the PSA Group and AVTEC Ltd for manufacture and supply of powertrains. The manufacturing sites for both vehicle assembly and powertrains will be based in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Peugeot India plans?

We aren’t certain on where the company will be looking at setting up its plant, but it should be somewhere around South India if it will want to retain the same set of vendors that it will set-up with Hindustan Motors.

The initial manufacturing capacity will be set at about 100,000 vehicles per year and will be followed by incremental investment to support a progressive ramp-up of the long term project. The manufacturing capacity for powertrains will cater to the domestic market needs and global OEMs.

The performance of the industrial set-up will be supported by a significant level of localization, in order to reach the necessary cost competitiveness.
