Hyundai has been on a spree of making SUVs. For India too, it has got the Santa Fe, then the Creta and now the Tucson. The brand is looking at getting a new compact SUV based on the i20. The company had showcased the Carlino concept earlier this year at the 2016 Auto Expo and then there was even the Intrado concept as well. Both these indicate the Hyundai i20 compact SUV is in the making. The Carlino might be a new platform but the Intrado based one, will be on the i20 platform.
Hyundai i20 compact SUV Design
From the images that we can see of the test vehicle it will be based on the Intrado Concept. Hyundai will be launching this SUV in Europe against the Nissan Juke, and for India, this will be under the Creta. There are lot of changes in the design. The new i20 based compact SUV will have crossover like design. There is a large front grille that is hexagonal and it has a new large Hyundai logo at the centre. The headlamps are sleek and fog lamps are LEDs. There are more vents underneath the fog lamp for better aerodynamics.
The idea is to make a funky looking SUV. There is a sloping roof and the side profile looks muscular. The rear door handles are located on the rear window panel. A black body cladding forms the lower part of the vehicle. The rear will have the same slender tail lamps with the license number on the bumper. Hyundai will carry its new design language.

The i20 based compact SUV will have sufficient space for the front and rear passengers. The idea is to make a stylish looking SUV that will be priced aggressively. The boot space too will be good enough and just under 400 litres. At the moment, it is a bit too early to comment on this new SUV, however looking at most of the Hyundai products, this won’t be a disappointment.
Hyundai i20 compact SUV Engine
The new i20 based compact SUV will be powered by a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine and a 14-litre diesel engine. The petrol will be an all new engine that will be offered on the Korean SUV. This will have the GDi technology and the smallest engine with this technology. The diesel is the regular one that is already powering the Elite i20. Hyundai will be looking at enhancing its reach in the market with this new SUV. This SUV will be offered with six-speed manual and automatic transmission.
Hyundai i20 compact SUV Competition
This new SUV will be competing with the likes of Ford Ecosport, Maruti Vitara Brezza and Mahindra TUV300. The other new competing products will be the Tata Nexon. This is a fast growing segment and Hyundai will not want to miss out on it.
