New Mahindra CNG SUV Coming To India?

Mahindra is expected to launch a new CNG SUV, and if the buzz is right, the wait is almost over. This could be the first factory-fitted CNG passenger SUV from the Thar and Scorpio maker. Whether you’re a daily office commuter, a family buyer watching your monthly budget, or someone who likes the performance but wants lower running costs, this one is for you.

Why This Launch Matters

Mahindra has stayed away from CNG in its passenger cars for a long time. Meanwhile, the Nexon and Brezza already offer factory-fitted CNG options, so buyers who wanted an SUV with low running costs had no Mahindra to pick. To help that, Mahindra is planning to launch the CNG version of its popular compact SUV, XUV 3XO. As many Indian buyers are shifting towards CNG instead of petrol, the CNG 3XO could help Mahindra boost sales volumes.

Mahindra CNG SUV: Expected Launch & Price

A few months ago, a rumour suggested Mahindra is planning to offer CNG with the XUV 3XO. However, there was no development on that case later. But it seems Mahindra could be ready with its product now. It might launch soon, possibly even this month. On pricing, expect the CNG models to cost Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 80,000 more than the regular trims. At present, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is priced between Rs. 9.15 lakh and Rs. 17.85 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

Engine And Performance: What To Expect

Don’t expect a brand-new engine. The CNG version is reportedly paired with the existing 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, MPFI turbo-petrol engine. It is technically simpler and cheaper to convert to CNG than the direct-injection version. Transmission-wise, a 6-speed manual is the likely option, as the CNG may not get an automatic. With a turbo-petrol engine paired with the CNG kit, it will be the second SUV in its class to have that after the Nexon.

Now, the boot space might bring some worry. The current XUV 3XO competitors that offer a CNG powertrain either get a dual-CNG kit (Nexon) or an underbody CNG tank (Brezza) – both help free up more boot space. However, there have been no reports of Mahindra using any of this tech for the CNG tank placement. That said, the Thar maker might eventually move to the standard model, wherein a big tank is placed inside the boot, which will eat a big share of the space.

We expect the CNG option to be offered up to the mid-trims, with the same feature offerings as the standard options. Apart from adding CNG, we don’t expect any new features or any design changes.
