The best-selling SUV in June 2026 is none other than the Tata Punch – and for good reason. And the reason for the Punch’s success is its value-for-money proposition – loads of features, assured safety, a great suite of powertrain options. Witnessing this success, Maruti seems to want a piece of that cake as the brand is rumoured to be working on its own compact SUV, codenamed Y43. So, here are 5 things we expect to see in the Maruti Y43.

1. Design – Upcoming Maruti SUV

The Maruti Y43 is expected to sport a tall-boy SUV design, much like the Tata Punch. We believe Maruti will offer connected LED DRLs upfront with LED headlights and LED taillights. From the side, we can expect to see a boxy silhouette and 16-inch or 17-inch alloy wheels for a more SUV-like stance. This kind of design has clearly worked in this segment, as buyers prefer buying a car with more road presence than a smaller SUV, and Maruti could do a great job with the Y43.

2. Features

Considering this will be pitted against the Tata Punch, Maruti will have to give a good amount of features to offer better value-for-money. Maruti will likely offer features like an electric sunroof, a 9-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, a wireless charging pad, automatic climate control, and much more.

3. Engine Options – Upcoming Maruti SUV

Unlike Tata, Maruti doesn’t usually offer a slew of powertrain options in its cars. However, we could expect to see multiple powertrain options in the Maruti Y43. The Y43 will likely get a 1.2-litre NA petrol engine, a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, a 1.2-litre petrol hybrid and a 1.2-litre petrol CNG option. A wide variety of engines to choose from allows buyers to pick the best match for themselves – powerful as well as fuel-efficient options. This might just give the Y43 an upper hand over the Tata Punch.

4. Safety

Ever since Indian buyers have started to prefer safer and stronger cars, Maruti has put everything into the process of offering safer cars like the Maruti Dzire, Victoria and the e Vitara. Following this, we can expect the upcoming Maruti cars, including the Y43, to offer impressive safety. We can expect to see safety features like a 360-degree camera, 6 airbags as standard, a tyre pressure monitoring system and much more, along with a strengthened platform. One of the key aspects of Tata SUVs is the assured safety they offer, and Maruti will have to rise to the same level to eat into the Punch’s sales.

5. Expected Launch And Pricing – Upcoming Maruti SUV

As of now, the Y43 hasn’t been spotted on the Indian roads. However, we can expect to see this SUV by the end of 2027 or early 2028. Being Maruti’s forte, we can expect the Y43 to undercut the Punch in terms of pricing. We can expect the Y43 to carry a price tag ranging from Rs 6.25 lakh to Rs 11 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). This could be the most affordable SUV in India, dethroning the Tata Punch.
