Volkswagen’s Cheapest SUV!

The Taigun is currently the cheapest SUV in Volkswagen’s lineup, but its sales have struggled due to intense competition in the segment. The Taigun lags behind in features and yet is one of the most expensive in the segment. Now, Volkswagen is expected to step into a tougher segment of compact SUVs. But can it be successful this time around?

Internationally, the Tera is a 4.1-m-long SUV, but we expect Volkswagen to reduce its length to fit into the sub-4m bracket. It is expected to be based on the Skoda Kylaq, which gives us a thorough idea of what to expect. Like with most Volkswagen models, it would be priced slightly higher than a Skoda. The Tera is expected to cost between Rs 9.5 lakh and Rs 16 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). It might be the cheapest VW in India, but it would still be one of the more expensive ones in the segment, as the Nexon, Venue, Sonet, etc all cost less.

It would share many components with the Kylaq. Some of its expected features include –

  • Sunroof
  • Reverse parking camera
  • Ventilated front seats
  • Wireless charging
  • 8-inch digital driver’s display
  • Automatic climate control
  • Rear AC vents
  • 10-inch infotainment screen
  • 6-airbags
  • Wireless charging

The Tera is expected to be powered by the same 1.0-litre TSI as the Kylaq. The same 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT would be offered as options. Moreover, given VW’s enthusiast-focused nature, we could also see a GT version. The GT version could get the 1.5-litre TSI motor and 7-speed DSG from the higher Taigun variants.
