Car makers have started announcing sales figures for May. The top 5 automakers have maintained their positions since April; however, Maruti has set a new high this month, selling a total of 1.9 lakh cars. This sales figure suggests that Maruti has sold approximately 6,100 cars every day, and 4 cars every minute! Let’s have a look at how the automakers performed this month –

Car Sales May 2026 –
In May, Maruti retained its position at the top of the best-selling carmakers chart with a wide margin. It recorded a total sales of 1,90,337 units. The second spot is held by Tata Motors with a total of 59,090 units sold, and Mahindra ranks third on the list with 58,021 units sold. Hyundai accounted for a total of 47,837 units sold, and Toyota recorded 30,574 units sold in May. Another fun fact is that Maruti’s sales are still higher than the combined sales of Mahindra, Tata, and Hyundai.
No major changes in sales percentage were observed when comparing sales in May 2026 to April 2026. However, compared to last year, Renault and Nissan saw a great jump of 64 percent and 117 percent, respectively.

What Else?
While the car-wise sales figures are still awaited, we believe the Maruti Dzire could have held the top position in the best-sellers list. The baton for best-selling SUVs is believed to be led by Nexon, Creta and Punch.

Plan For Future
Maruti’s sales are also expected to increase in the coming months, as the automaker plans to launch several new models, including the Brezza facelift and a new 7-seater electric model. Apart from that, Tata’s upcoming EV models, such as the Sierra EV and Safari EV, might further boost its electric market share. Furthermore, the Nissan Tekton is expected to boost the brand’s sales. Along with these, JSW’s entry by Diwali is also expected to trouble the overall best-sellers. The brand has already planned several new models, priced between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 50 lakh!
