BMW had launched the 3-Series refresh earlier this year, and the engine options at the time of launch clearly indicated the company’s preference for diesel power-plants. Even after the Green Tribunal rulings against high-capacity diesel engines in cars, BMW’s Indian portfolio remained relatively untouched, as their engines were well within the regulatory framework. However, with the policy environment showing signs of change towards petrol engines once again, the company has decided to focus on its petrol engine range once again.

BMW have introduced the new, 320i into their 3-Series line-up. Sitting pretty under the hood is the potent four-cylinder, TwinPower turbocharged engine that displaces all of 2.0 litres. The ‘Three’ in petrol guise churns out 184 bhp & 270 Nm of torque. All this power is sent surging through to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox that comes as standard. Paddle shifters only make an appearance in the higher spec, Luxury Line variant, while the entry-level ‘Prestige’ variant makes do with the regular ‘auto-box’. The 320i, like its diesel powered sibling dismisses the zero-100 dash in 7.3 seconds.

On the outside, the 320i gets LED based headlamp units, while the wing mirrors are heated and come with a memory function. Step inside, and there’s ambient lighting casting a welcome glow within the cabin. There’s dual-zone climate control on offer, while the front seats are electronically adjustable with memory function. There’s also the signature iDrive controls along with multiple drive modes. 16 inch alloys are offered as standard as well on the entry-level ‘Prestige’ version.

The Luxury Line variant naturally, ups the game a few notches. There’s more of the usual, tasteful lashes of chrome on the outside, as well as within the cabin. It also rides higher, on 17-inch alloys in this guise. There’s a choice of upholstery on offer, while the iDrive system comes with a larger, 8.8-inch touch based interface. The infotainment system can recognize handwriting inputs, and also comes with turn-by-turn navigation on-board. An electric sun-roof & a premium, 205 watt speaker system complete the package.

Pricing wise, BMW have taken an aggressive position with the standard spec ‘Prestige’ variant starting at INR 40 lakhs, while the premium, Luxury Line variant is priced at INR 46 Lakhs (On-road, Delhi). This pricing strategy undercuts that offered by the competition, including the Mercedes-Benz C-Class as well as the Jaguar XE by a significant amount.

BMW is also due to re-introduce the 5-Series in petrol guise. The 520i will share the same 2.0 litre, TwinPower turbocharged motor with its smaller sibling. However, the company is said to be taking the fully-loaded route with the petrol-engined 520i and the car will be available only in the ‘Luxury Line’ variant. Passenger features though shall be suitably upgraded with the iDrive system getting a 10.2 inch touchscreen interface along with a bespoke Harman Kardon system in keeping with the segment requirements. Other details including the pricing and features are still trickling in, and we’ll keep you updated as more information flows in.
