What Is This Technology?

By the end of 2026, the Indian government plans to implement a Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication system in cars. The system works on the principle of communication between different vehicles. You can think of the system as a SIM card. With this tech, your vehicle is in direct communication with other cars around you. Key details of the car, such as vehicle speed, braking behaviour, and vehicle position, are shared with nearby cars. With this information, the system will be able to warn the driver if it notices any anomalous driving activity nearby.

It can be confused with ADAS, but it has slightly different functionality. ADAS systems use sensors, while V2V relies on the network and does not require them. While ADAS systems can override the driver, V2V systems are limited to issuing alerts. Moreover, V2V works in tandem with ADAS systems.

Why Do We Need It?

The purpose of this system is to ensure maximum safety and minimal accidents. With rising pollution and smog, this system can be crucial in low-visibility conditions. Recently, we have seen a surge in fog-related accidents, and this system will help reduce them. When you have limited visibility on the road, the V2V system will help alert you and other drivers. You may not see the road ahead, but the alert will notify you to slow down at crucial times. Nearby cars, stationary or moving, will simultaneously be alerted about your position.

Who Will Pay For It?

The government plans to invest about Rs 5,000 crore in this project. Despite this, you would have to pay extra to get this system in your car. The exact amount has not yet been announced, but expect a slight increase in car prices when this system is officially launched. The system is scheduled to be implemented by the end of 2026. Initially, new cars will be equipped with V2V tech, and it’s possible this system will be made mandatory on older cars as well. Since the system doesn’t require sensors or complex ADAS tech, installing the V2V system will be rather straightforward.
