Launch

Volkswagen recently revealed the Polo in an all-new avatar. While the Polo may have been discontinued in Indian markets, it is still a hit in Europe. Volkswagen keep updating the Polo, and this is the biggest revision yet. It has been launched in the UK as the ID.Polo, which is the electric version. This model will also be offered with petrol options in the near future.

Features

Near the end of Polo’s reign in India, it began to fall behind the competition and became outdated. But with the next-gen Polo, you get all the features you could dream of. The overall layout remains sensible and practical like the old-gen, but it’s now packed with features and tech.

With the ID.Polo, you get a 13-inch infotainment screen, front parking sensors, a 360-degree camera and a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display. Moreover, you get physical climate control buttons. Many Volkswagen customers have complained about the lack of physical buttons in their new cars, such as the Tiguan R-Line and Golf GTI. Other expected features include a sunroof, wireless charging, ADAS, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The build quality remains top-notch, with an abundance of soft-touch materials throughout the cabin. It has also become more practical with more rear passenger space and a 435L boot.

Powertrain

With the electric version, you get 2 battery options – a 37 kWh LFP battery and a 54 kWh NMC battery. The power ranges from 113 to 133 bhp for the smaller battery and 207 bhp for the bigger one. Volkswagen has also revealed the GTI version, which would get the 54 kWh battery and 226 bhp. The larger battery pack has a claimed range of 450 km, putting it on par with the Tata Nexon EV.

Volkswagen has yet to reveal the petrol version, but we expect it to be available with a 1.0L TSI engine, a 5-speed manual, and the iconic DSG gearbox.

Looks

The Polo has always been a tiny hatchback, and that is one of its main USP. But the Polo is no longer the same small hatchback. The new ID.Polo is 4.05m long and 1.8m wide. If Volkswagen decides to release this in India, it will shorten it to take advantage of the tax break for cars longer than 4m. The German manufacturer unveiled the ID.Polo with camouflage, but the few notable features are the red Volkswagen badge, striking alloy wheels and sleek headlights and taillights. The Polo remains a good-looking car and is a breath of fresh air in the SUV-focused market.

India Launch and Pricing

Volkswagen is planning to release a new sub-4m car in the Indian market later this year. While some speculate it is the VW Tera, there is a small chance this Polo could make a comeback as an electric or petrol-only vehicle. Rumours also suggest that the Tera will be rebadged as a Polo and sold in India. This move could be made to attract the Polo’s major fanbase. If launched, it would compete with the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV3XO, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Kia Sonet and other sub-4m cars.

The Polo will no longer be the affordable pick from the Volkswagen range. With its comprehensive feature list, you could expect the price to start at 9 lakh rupees and go up to 16 lakh rupees (on-road, Mumbai). The EV will be even more expensive and could cross the 20 lakh rupee mark. Volkswagen could cut costs if it launched it as a CKD (built in India) unit rather than a CBU (import) unit. While there are no concrete rumours about the Polo’s launch, its fanbase will definitely be on its toes, hoping for one.
