According to sources, Toyota is planning to expand its footprint in rural India. For such a crowd, the brand is developing an affordable pick-up truck that will likely rival the Bolero pick-up or even the Tata Yodha. Currently, there is not much information available about the affordable Toyota pick-up. However, it is highly possible that Toyota may launch the Hilux Champ as an affordable option. Why?
Why Hilux Champ?
In 2023, Toyota showcased the IMV 0 platform, a derivative of its IMV platform that will underpin affordable Toyota SUVs. Talking of which, the new modular platform has already been revealed with products like – Rangga, FJ Cruiser and Hilux Champ. Among these, the FJ Cruiser, confirmed for an India launch, is expected to be priced between Rs 25 lakh & Rs 30 lakh (on-road, Mumbai).

Similarly, Toyota may consider bringing another affordable product based on the IMV 0 platform – the Hilux Champ. Globally, the pick-up truck is offered in multiple wheelbase & engine options. The LWB is identical to the India-spec Hilux at 3085mm. However, the SWB model with a 2750mm wheelbase is apt for the Indian market, given the affordability Toyota is targeting. The engine options for the Champ in global markets include – 2.4-litre diesel engine, 2.0-litre NA petrol engine & 2.7-litre NA petrol engine. All these engines are mated with manual & automatic gearbox options. That said, we can expect a 2.7-litre NA petrol and 2.4-litre diesel engines for India.

The launch timeline is not yet confirmed, but it should enter the market after the FJ Cruiser launch in 2027.
