New FASTag Rule

New FASTag Rule

National Payment Corporation of India, in collaboration with NHAI, has introduced a new rule for FASTag users. It is a new process – KYV or Know Your Vehicle, where users are required to submit photos of their cars and a copy of their registration certificate (RC book). The images must be uploaded via the bank that issued the FASTag – either online or via the bank’s mobile application. Additionally, Fastag users will have to repeat the process every 3 years to keep the database up to date. So, what exactly do you need to submit? Check the list below –

  • Car’s front photo with number plate & FASTag clearly visible
  • Car’s side profile photo – entire car should be in the frame
  • Photo of your FASTag sticker from inside – ensuring it has been fixed on the inner side of the windshield
  • Front & back photos of your car’s registration certificate

The rule was initially introduced in October 2024. However, banks never enforced the rules strictly on the FASTag users. That said, after a rise in fraudulent activity, NPCI has tightened its enforcement. Failing to upload the given data will result in the deactivation of FASTag & users will not be able to make online payments in FASTag tolls – resulting in penalties.

Why New Rule?

toll fight

So why exactly has the new rule been enforced on FASTag users? Common fraudulent activities like – using a small car FASTag on a commercial vehicle to avoid higher toll rates & swapping a FASTag in different cars were increasing in India. To avoid these, a foolproof rule has been put in place. Also, it is important to note that there are no public announcements regarding this! The rule came into the limelight after users who did not complete KYV were denied access to FASTag lanes – forced to pay the penalty. So, share this with your known ones who own a car and often travel on national highways.
