BMW has announced a global recall of more than 3 lakh cars due to a defect that could lead to fires. The recall also extends to Toyota Supras, which are built under a BMW contract.

Around 3,31,000 BMWs are on the list of recall, major models in the list are from the United States. The production timeline of these cars is said to be between 2015 and 2021. The recall also extends to about 1,469 Toyota Supras – built by BMW under a contract.
Why Are BMWs Being Called Back?
Several owners have reported about the issue of starter motors. The main issue is linked to water entering the starter motor and corroding the components. The corrosion has reportedly led to short circuits. Investigations have revealed about ten such confirmed incidents of fire at present, these problems can occur even if a car is running or has been parked.
Which cars are being called back? The recall lists some popular BMWs made between 2015 and 2021. The models include BMW Z4 (2019-2022), BMW 330i (2019-2021), BMW X3 (2020-2022), BMW 430i (2021-2022), 2022 BMW 230i, X4 and 530i.
The major chunk of recalled cars are from the United States and Germany, while other additional numbers are spread across Europe and Asian regions. With over 3 lakh vehicles recalled, it is one of the major recalls from BMW in recent years.
Because of the seriousness of the fire risk, BMW dealerships will provide starter motor replacements free of charge, and in some cases battery replacements may also be necessary. The company has said repairs will be carried out in phases depending on the availability of parts. Owners can check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) online to confirm if their car is part of the recall.

BMW Owners In India Be Aware!
At present, BMW has not yet issued a separate recall yet, but the owners must be cautious. Indian owners should check with the dealerships to confirm whether their vehicles are covered or not.
