Nissan India Shutdown – Really?

Earlier, Nissan was expected to collaborate with Honda, which it later turned down. Now, to stay more in the game the brand is looking to shut down seven global factories. In these 7-shortlisted to be shut down plants, India’s production facility is also likely being reviewed. The Renault-Nissan alliance plant in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu which is used only for manufacturing Magnite SUV is under review. However, we expect the brand to shed some light about its stance on carrying its operations in the country soon. This is majorly due as Nissan is aiming to reduce global costs by Rs 28,000 crore as a part of its turnaround plan, under which the brand will eliminate 20,000 jobs world wide. Other countries reportedly facing plant shutdowns include Argentina, South Africa and two sites in Mexico. (Nissan India Shutdown)
What Else?

However, we think that the things that are spreading currently about Nissan’s exit from India might be a rumor. This is majorly because, Nissan has committed to launch 3 new models in the Indian market. The list of models includes a compact SUV, a 7-seater MPV and an electric SUV. The first Nissan model, the 7-seater MPV is expected to be launched this year itself, as per the brands plan. However, the 5-seater SUV will be launched in early 2026. Additionally, the carmaker also plans to bring in an electric SUV developed in India.

Apart from that, in a statement Nissan communicated “ As a policy we do not comment on speculatory reports. Nissan remains committed to its India operations, dealers, partners, and customers.Regarding the recent reports on the potential closure of certain plants, Nissan wants to clarify that this news is speculative and not based on any official information of the company.” That said, till the brand announces anything about it, we must not trust any media publication saying that brand will close its India’s production.
