The pickup segment has never really enticed the Indian audience. Several manufacturers like Toyota and Isuzu have tried their luck with the Hilux and V-Cross, respectively. Still, there is potential in this segment and that is why last year Mahindra showcased its Scorpio-N Pick up concept. Mahindra’s pickup is expected next year and ahead of that it could face an all-new rival in the form of BYD Shark. Let’s talk about it.

BYD Shark

BYD Shark

BYD Shark is based on a ladder on a frame chassis and measures 5,457mm in length, 1,971mm in width and 1,925mm in height. It sits on a massive wheelbase of 3,260mm. Talking about the design, the Shark comes with a bold and muscular design. At the front, we have C-shaped DRLs connecting in the middle. It comes with LED headlamps and fog lamps. The side profile is typical of any pickup with a 4-door cabin layout. Coming to the rear, we have connected tail lamps with the BYD logo in the middle.

BYD Shark – Specifications

BYD Shark

The Shark comes with a plug-in hybrid setup that comes with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine paired with a 29.58kWh battery pack. In turn, this battery pack powers the two electric motors – one at each axle. The total output from this setup is 430bhp. The BYD shark can go 100km on purely electric power. Additionally, the Total range on a full tank and the full battery is said to be up to 840km. The battery can be charged from 30 to 80% in 20 mins with a 40kW DC charger.

Interior and features

BYD Shark

The interior of the Shark is quite similar to the recently launched Seal sedan. The only change here is that the dashboard looks more rugged. In the middle, we have a 12.3-inch infotainment system which doesn’t rotate like other BYD cars. Other features include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, 12-inch heads-up display, 50W wireless charger, 360-degree camera, transparent bonnet, NFC, etc.

BYD Shark – Launch and pricing

BYD Shark

For now, BYD has launched the Shark UTE in Mexico, and its launch in Australia is expected by the end of this year. In Mexico, the pricing of the Shark starts from $53,400 (INR 44 lakh), which is quite a lucrative pricing. Will it come to India? BYD is slowly bringing all its global products to India, and it could also bring the Shark UTE in limited numbers. The Shark would perfectly rival the Toyota Hilux and the upcoming Mahindra Scorpio-N Pickup.
