For a manufacturer that primarily deals in SUVs, it is surprising that the Mahindra doesn’t have a car in the highly attractive C-SUV segment. Almost all manufacturers have cars here, barring Tata and Mahindra. Tata has this covered with the upcoming Curvv. So what about Mahindra? Mahindra could revive the XUV500 nameplate for a C-SUV offering. In today’s article, let’s talk about the Mahindra XUV500.

Will it come back?
According to media reports, Mahindra does plan on bringing back the XUV500 in the future. Considering it doesn’t have a C-SUV product, it makes sense that Mahindra wants to target it. Dimension-wise, the XUV400 does compete with the C-SUV, but its EV credentials do hamper its sales. So, a proper C-SUV rival based on the same platform as XUV400 and XUV400 could be beneficial for the brand. The XUV500 nameplate could suit it as it will sit between the XUV300 and XUV700.
Without any sightings, it is hard to speculate on the design. We can expect an aggressive design language like the XUV700 and upcoming XUV300 facelift. Competing in the C-SUV is hard, and Mahindra will need to go hard with premium interiors and features. What about the specifications? Mahindra could use the 1.5-litre TGDi engine it showcased at the Auto Expo of 2020. This engine is capable of producing 163bhp and 280Nm. Diesel duties will be handled by the 1.5-litre diesel engine like the XUV300 but with better tuning.
Mahindra XUV500 – Launch timeline
For now, all these are just rumours. Mahindra has given some hints but has never outright confirmed or denied these rumours. With the brand currently focused on its Born Electric cars, the launch looks still far away. Nonetheless, one thing for sure is that Mahindra will be looking to bring a disruptive product like the XUV700 to this segment.
