All-New Mini Convertible – First Drive Impressions

The All-New Mini Convertible has been launched for INR 38.5 lakhs (on-road). This Convertible is sold via the CBU (complete built unit) route in India. We take this convertible for a spin around the roads of Goa.

All-New Mini Convertible Styling and Design:

The exterior styling of the Mini Convertible is similar to the new-generation Mini. The car looks very sporty and blends muscular styling with the old-school charm on the original Mini. The oval headlamps, the wide trapezoidal grille are a trademark of the Mini.The oval ORVMS add some flair. The rear has rectangular vertical taillamps, typical of a Mini, with a chrome sill in the centre, above the number plate.

The convertible now comes with a fully automatic, electrically powered soft top operation system. This also has a fully integrated roll-over protection. There is also a wind deflector that can be locked in position right behind the front seats. The soft top takes about 18 seconds to open or close. There is even a Mini Excitement Package, which has LED interior and ambient lighting and even Mini logo on the ground. The new Mini convertible is agilely larger that its predecessor.

All-New Mini Convertible Interiors:

The interior is loaded with all bells and whistles. The convertible carries the traditional, large centre-mounted speedometer. It has sports seats for driver and front passenger, expanded seat surfaces and increased headroom. Multi-function Sport Leather Steering Wheel and Sports Seats for driver and front passenger enhance the unique ‘go-kart’ feel of the all-new MINI Convertible and are offered as standard. Vibrant colours and high-end leather upholstery in a multitude of exciting combinations make sure that every MINI stands out on its own. The Mini Convertible has a boot space of 215 litres, which is about 25 percent larger than its predecessor.

All-New Mini Convertible Features:

The all-new MINI Convertible also comes with optional features like MINI Head-up Display, Harman Kardon hi-fi system and LED headlights with cornering function. The optional Wired Package includes Navigation System Professional, a bigger 8.8’ screen with Touch Controller and Bluetooth mobile connectivity. The exciting world of MINI Connected is available with the optional Radio MINI Visual Boost.

All-New Mini Convertible Engine and Performance:

The Mini Convertible comes with a  2.0-litre petrol engine that produces 192bhp of power and 280Nm of torque. It comes with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the six-speed sports transmission is optional with paddle shifts. The car goes from 0 to 100km/hr in 7.1 seconds and has a top speed of 233km/hr. With increased efficiency, enhanced shift comfort, optimised acoustic and vibration response, the newly developed 6-speed automatic transmission contributes to the sophisticated characteristics of the drive system. The optional 6-speed sports automatic transmission can be operated using shift paddles. The Mini offers quick acceleration, sharp handling and is highly customizable. The Mini accelerates briskly and in sport mode it is a different animal. The exhaust roar is one you cannot miss. Every time you step on the gas, you can’t help smiling.

All-New Mini Convertible Ride and Handling:

The Mini always had a fantastic handling. An optional Dynamic Damper Control further improves ride quality and suspension by stabilizing all irregularities on the road. The car maintained its poise even under a heavy slalom test. The steering wheel is meaty and nice to hold. Comfortable seats with extendable under-thigh support are also brilliant.

All-New Mini Convertible Safety:

The all- new MINI Convertible is stacked with cutting-edge safety technology. The standard safety equipment comprises of Front and Passenger Airbags, Brake Assist, 3-Point Seat Belts, Dynamic Stability Control, Crash Sensor, Anti-lock Braking System, Cornering Brake Control and Run-flat Indicator. The brakes are very good and the car stops well within 2 metres from 60-0 km/h.

In addition, the standard MINIMALISM technology includes an auto start/stop function, brake energy recuperation, shift point display and electromechanical power steering.

The Mini Convertible is the only convertible at this price point. Hence, there is no doubt that this is a unique offering. We believe the competition is working on getting convertibles of their iconic vehicles. But the Mini is the only one for the time being.
