Hyundai is working on an all new compact SUV. The concept of this was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo. It is called the Hyundai Carlino. Hyundai would not want to miss this segment, as it is the fastest growing. The Creta was recently launched with a facelift. Hyundai would want to beat the Brezza. Hence, a smaller SUV will see the daylight .At the moment, the Carlino hasn’t got into the production version but this SUV will be going up against the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford Ecosport and the Tata Nexon. This will be an all new design to capture the compact SUV market.

Hyundai Carlino

Will the car be called the Carlino, we don’t know yet. The car is set to get market specific flourishes and touches to make it better suitable. With new spy shots of the car coming to light, the car looks like it’s is taking a lot styling ques and design style from the bigger Hyundai Creta. The car is looking to shape up more in-tune with the Hyundai families design in mind. The rear tail lamps look like they are smaller and sleeker versions of the Creta’s tail lamps.

Hyundai has already started testing this new car in the country. New spy shots of the Carlino testing have surfaced. The car car was earlier spotted testing in the South Korea and North America recently. We don’t know if Hyundai plans to expot this car from India to other nations, but it could definitely be a part of the automakers plans. The car which is going to go up against the Brezza, EcoSport and the Nexon is shown testing here.

The Carlino gets a boxy styling and looks rugged as well. The production model will be different but will look more refined. People prefer hard core SUV looks to crossovers. Buyers need a vehicle that makes them feel they drive something big and SUV-like. That is what the SUV has always been. The design will be like an SUV but underneath it will be a modern vehicle. Light in weight, good in performance and driving dynamics along with high ground clearance. Hyundai shall be offering a new petrol engine and the diesel will be boosted more power. New transmissions will also be offered. We reckon, Hyundai should show something at the Auto Expo, which will amazing if there is also something closer to the compact SUV vehicle. We cannot predict anything on that, but it is more of a wait and watch game. What will the Hyundai Carlino have on offer in more details, all ahead.

Price is one of the most important aspects for a vehicle and a major point to make the buying decision. This will be a compact SUV and it will be offered in the price range of Rs 8 lakhs to about Rs 12 lakhs. It will be competing with other SUVs in this price point. There will be not much difference in the pricing.

Hyundai Carlino Design

The compact SUV concept was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo as the Hyundai Carlino concept. This SUV had boxy styling. Something one looks for in an SUV. Wheels on all the corners, long wheelbase and big size tyres. This is what will make it a SUV-look alike. That is what even the Creta is all about. If you look at the front of this SUV, you shall notice the large front-grille and sleek headlamps.

If we see the spy shots we can see a lot of the design cues from the concept vehicle have been carried on into the production version of the car. The car looks like it will be borrowing space and practicality in design from it’s elder sibling the Hyundai Creta.

The side profile looks muscular and the Hyundai Carlino is one of the most stylish looking SUV concepts around. This is Hyundai’s first compact SUV and Hyundai has delayed its MUV plan to get the this one faster. There will be some elements from the Carlino concept, however this will be an all new SUV in design. Hyundai stated that the new Carlino will have technology, function and even fashion as it three important pillars. The wheel arches are muscular.

Hyundai Carlino Interior

Hyundai’s statement was, “HND-14, Carlino is sub 4 meter concept SUV developed at the Hyundai Namyang Design Centre. HND-14, Hyundai Carlino boasts multi-function lifestyle ability making an urban iconic statement with its unique design and stylish exteriors. The futuristic design direction showcases Hyundai’s commitment to meet the growing aspirations of Indian customers opting for SUV’s.”

The Hyundai Carlino will have macho looks and not crossover like design. The Carlino concept will have squarish wheel arches, large size wheels, high ground clearance (at least 195mm) and aggressive styling. The Carlino will be a vehicle for daily work use on weekdays and adventure trips on the weekend. So, it will have good space in both the rows and even the boot space should be better than the competition (Just what Hyundai did with the XCent). The length of the Hyundai Carlino will be under four metres. Ideally this should be base don the Grand i10 platform, and space will be one of the strongest USPs of this compact SUV.

On the inside, it will have good enough space in both the rows. Hyundai has been focusing on enhancing the rear seat space on most of its products, like the Grand i10, i20 and the XCent. The Grand i10 was modified for the Indian car market to increase its wheelbase and rear seat knee room. The boot size too will be large enough for a vehicle of this segment. One of the best bits will be the features on offer. Hyundai will offering best-in-class features. Hyundai Carlino seating capacity is of 5 people only.

Hyundai Carlino Specifications

Hyundai Carlino rear

Hyundai has announced that the Carlino will be getting a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. We reckon this should produce about 130bhp of power. Ford used to offer the Ecoboost engine on the Ecosport, but it has been discontinued due to limited sales. This will be an exciting engine for the Indian market. Tata Nexon has been doing well in the Indian market with its petrol engine. Possibility, this will be an example that Hyundai shall be offering lesser power for better mileage. This engine will come mated to a six-speed manual transmission and there will be an automatic or AMT on offer too.

In diesel there will be the 1.4-litre diesel producing about 95-100bhp of power. The Hyundai Carlino will be sold with these two engines. There will be six-speed manual and even a six-speed automatic transmission that will be offered on both the engines. That is when the compact SUV segment will get something new. There is a petrol automatic but no diesel automatic at the moment. The diesel will be the major seller in this segment. Hyundai also has a 1.2-litre diesel engine, but we aren’t certain if that will make it into production anytime soon.

 Hyundai Carlino Competition

The Hyundai Carlino competes with the Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Ford Ecosport. This is one segment that is on the rise and is a the moment one of the fastest growing. Hyundai Carlino will add more variety for car buyers and an opportunity to upgrade to an SUV instead of a premium hatchback. Hyundai’s strategy will be to price the vehicle at par with Maruti Suzuki and at the same time even offer more additional value for its compact SUV. This has what Hyundai has been with its new products. There is also the Tata Nexon that compete with the Carlino. The Mahindra TUV300 can also be called as a competition to this SUV. The competition has now become stiff as other compact SUVs have now upped the game.

There is also the Tata Nexon and the Honda WR-V, which will be serious threat to the Carlino. These are the new players that have been doing well in the Indian car market. Hyundai will want to counter them all with the new range of its products. Hyundai will be looking at getting the best-in-class space, features, design, performance and mileage on board with the Carlino.
