Why don’t Indians buy diesel car anymore?

In India, diesel cars have been a popular choice for many years due to their fuel efficiency and relatively lower cost. Some people swear by diesel engines and have used only diesel cars all their life. However, in recent years, there has been a decline in the sale of diesel cars. In 2012, diesel had a 54% market share in the Indian market. Since the BS6 emission norms, diesel sales dropped to 18% in 2020 and we had a marginal rise to 19% in 2022. Government Policies

The Indian government has implemented several policies over the past few years to discourage the use of diesel cars. The Indian government is implying various emission norms affecting cars. BS6 emission norms were the biggest setback for diesel cars. Now diesel cars need DPF filters to control their pollution levels. Though it sounds simple, it increased the cost of diesel cars. If that was not enough, the BS6 stage 2 norms came in to add another punch. With this small diesel engines were put to rest by most manufacturers. Delhi, which was a major contributor to diesel engines, banned 10-year-old diesel cars. This has also put off a lot of people from buying diesel cars. These constant changes and norms have led to people skipping diesel engines.

Environmental Concerns

Diesel cars are known to emit higher levels of pollutants compared to petrol cars. The pollutants emitted by diesel cars, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), have been linked to respiratory illnesses and environmental damage. India is home to some of the most polluted cities in the world, and diesel cars are one of the major contributors to air pollution. As a result, consumers are becoming more conscious of their environmental impact and are opting for cleaner alternatives, such as electric and hybrid cars.

With advancements in technology, petrol cars have become almost as fuel-efficient as diesel cars. The fuel efficiency gap between petrol and diesel cars has reduced significantly, making petrol cars a more viable option for consumers. Additionally, electric and hybrid cars have become more affordable and accessible in recent years, providing consumers with cleaner and more efficient alternatives to diesel cars.
