The Thar reignited the lifestyle SUV segment in the country. Since its launch in 2020, it has single-handedly ruled this segment with little to no resistance. Now the Thar is finally going to face a worthy rival in the form of the newly unveiled Jimny 5-door. So what should a prospective buyer do? Buy the Thar or wait for the Jimny? Let’s first talk about the dimensions, the Thar is 3985mm in length, 1855mm in width & 1896mm in height. It sits on a wheelbase of 2450mm and has an unladen ground clearance of 226mm. In comparison, Jimny is 3985mm in length, 1645mm in width and 1720mm in height. The wheelbase of Jimny is 2590mm and the ground clearance of 200mm. So the Thar is clearly wider and taller than the Jimny 5-door. But the Jimny has a longer wheelbase giving it better legroom.

With the addition of the new diesel engine, Thar now has three engine options. First is the 2.0-litre petrol capable of producing 150bhp and 300Nm (MT) and 320Nm (AT) of torque. The two diesel engines are a 1.5-litre unit capable of producing 118bhp and 300Nm of torque and a 2.2-litre unit capable of producing 130bhp and 320Nm of torque. In terms of transmission, the 1.5-litre diesel comes with only a manual gearbox. While the other two engines come with manual and automatic gearbox options. 

The Jimny on other hand comes only with petrol engine options. This engine is the 1.5-litre K15B unit capable of producing 101bhp & 134Nm of torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic gearbox. It is clear that the Jimny 

Features

The Thar comes with features like a 7-inch infotainment system, multi-function steering wheel, auto AC, TPMS, front fog lamps, 18-inch alloy wheels, connected car technology, and brake locking differential. In comparison, Maruti has kitted the Jimny with features. It gets features like a 9-inch infotainment system, ARKAMYs sound system, basic Suzuki connect, auto headlamps, cruise control and all power windows. 

Pricing

Mahindra recently launched a new RWD variant of the Thar to counter the Jimny. With this variant, the pricing of the Thar starts from Rs 12.12 lakh and goes to Rs 19.78 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). The RWD variant starts from Rs 12.12 lakh, while the 4×4 variants start from Rs 16.28 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). 

Maruti for now has only opened the bookings of the Jimny 5-door. The booking amount is set at Rs 25,000. We expect Maruti to reveal the pricing in mid-2023 and it could get a sub-10 lakh starting price.   

Thar vs Jimny – Conclusion

So should a prospective buyer wait? It is a difficult question to answer. The Thar and Jimny though both off-roaders they kind of cater to different buyers. The Thar has built its macho off-roader image that the Jimny can’t match. The Jimny shines in its off-roading capabilites due to its nimbleness. If you are on the fence about buying the Thar then you can wait for the Jimny. But if you want the big SUV feel you can’t go wrong with the Thar. Either way both cars will fill your appetite for off-roading.
