Tata Nexon VS Mahindra Thar – Design & Dimensions
If we talk about the top seller, the Nexon is 3,993mm in length, 1,811mm in width & 1,606mm in height. It sits on a wheelbase of 2,498mm. The ground clearance sits at 209mm. Moreover, if we talk about the boot space it measures 350 litres. Now, if we move towards the design part, the Nexon looks modern and sporty. It has all the SUV elements which give it a bold stance and rugged appearance. All in all, the Nexon looks imposing on the road.
If we talk about the Mahindra Thar, it does not require any introduction. Thar has its own sweet spot in terms of road presence and many buyers actually buy the Thar for its looks. Though it’s a lifestyle offroader with a rugged chassis, washable interiors, and high ground clearance at 226mm. The dimensions of the car measure 3,985 mm in length, and 1,855 mm in width and stand tall at a height of 1,896mm. All in all, if you want an SUV wherein road presence is your need, the Thar could be the option.

Tata Nexon is one of the most loaded cars in the segment. It gets features like a touchscreen infotainment system, connected car tech, electric sunroof, voice assistant, What-3-Words navigation assist, air purifier, ventilated front seats, TPMS, and more. You also get the Nexon in a slew of special editions like Jet, Kaziranga, Dark, etc which gives it an extra special touch in terms of appearance and styling.
If we move on to Thar, it offers a no-nonsense look with all the necessary features required. You don’t get all the bells and whistles which are there in the Nexon but what you get is a 7.0-inch infotainment system, power windows, digital MID, TPMS, cruise control, power windows and more. If you see, Thar is proposed towards the adventure seeker category whereas the Nexon with its loaded list tends towards a family car.
Tata Nexon VS Mahindra Thar – Specifications
Tata offers the Nexon with two engine options. It gets a 1.2-litre turbo petrol that makes 117bhp and 170Nm of torque. Another one is the 1.5-litre diesel which makes 108bhp and 260Nm of torque. Both of these engines are available with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed AMT gearbox.
Then, if we move on to the lifestyle offroader, it is now available with three engine options. But, as we are talking about the rear wheel drive Thar, we will talk about the new 1.5-litre diesel that makes 117bhp and 300Nm of torque. However, it comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox only. Another one is the 2.0-litre petrol engine paired with a 6-speed AT that makes 150bhp and 320Nm of torque. There is no manual gearbox available with the petrol engine option.
Pricing
Pricing of the Thar starts at Rs 12.12 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) for the diesel AX (O) manual. Whereas, Nexon starts at Rs 9.07lakh (on-road, Mumbai) for the base variant. If you compare the variants according to the equivalent pricing, you can get the ‘XZ Plus’ petrol manual at Rs 12.39 lakhs (on-road, Mumbai).
Tata Nexon VS Mahindra Thar – Which one should you get?
The question boils down to which can extract the most bang for your buck. As these cars sit on two different segments, it filters down on your needs. If you want a family car that can do all your errands alongwith new-age features and tech, Nexon could be your choice of option. On the other hand, Mahindra Thar RWD offers a great deal with all the macho appearance you could ever need. The car has now got affordable with the two-wheel drive setup.
