Honda’s iconic sedan which shared a huge hand in developing the brand name is soon to bite the dust. The Japanese automaker is likely to phase out an important aspect of the City which could be a bummer for buyers. The brand is touted to phase out its i-DTEC mill which could simply mean that the Honda City diesel has to discontinue. What led to this dire situation? Let us find out.

Honda City diesel discontinue – Why?

Honda City diesel

The world is turning towards greener transportation with more stiff emission norms for vehicles. If we talk about India, the employment of BS6 norms led to a significant decrease in diesel vehicle sales in the hatchback and sedan segments. The increased cost of producing emission-compliant diesel engines and the introduction of turbo petrol contributed to the dilation in diesel sales.

Honda City diesel discontinue – BS6 Phase 2 Norms

In the upcoming year wherein we would be seeing the implication of BS6 Phase 2 norms and also a complete eradication of diesel engines from hatchbacks and sedans. This is due to the extra costs of adding more advanced camshafts, expensive SCR (selective catalytic reduction) and other upgrades. For reference, this SCR filter system is currently used in mostly SUVs which have higher engine capacity over 2000cc. But, the upcoming RDE norms would require even the smaller capacity mills to induce it for compliance.

This additional fitment of equipment would bare significant costs on the hatchback and sedan segment and eventually increase the car costs. This is likely to reduce the diesel buyer base to almost nil which is already minimal in current times. Therefore, Honda will discontinue the city diesel due to no feasibility seen in the future.

What’s next from Honda?

The Japanese giant is likely to focus on a Hybrid power train. We already have the hybrid City which is more expensive than the ICE model but more efficient, cleaner and feature loaded. For all those who are willing to buy the City, Honda will continue its tried and tested i-VTEC petrol mills in the future. Moreover, we also have the new sub-compact SUV from the brand which will be unwrapped in 2023. This SUV will rival the likes of Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, and other cars in the segment.
