Mahindra surprised everyone by launching the new-generation Thar in 2020. The Thar had been an iconic nameplate before that, but with its new generation, Mahindra added modernity to this SUV. This modernity helped the Thar to find new buyers. Now, Mahindra is looking to take this to the next level by bringing the Thar 5-door. We have talked about the Thar 5-door in detail several times. However, today we will be covering its possible engine specifications. In today’s article, let’s talk about the Thar 5-door engine & power figures.
Thar 5-door engine – Power figures
The Thar 5-door will be based on the new ladder on frame chassis like the Scorpio-N. It will share quite a few of its mechanical bits with the Scorpio-N and we think Mahindra could even give it the engine specifications of the Scorpio-N. So it could come with a 2.0-litre petrol engine capable of producing 200bhp and 370Nm of torque. While diesel duties could be handled by the 2.2-litre diesel producing 172bhp and 370Nm of torque. This extra power makes sense, considering the added weight and longer wheelbase of the Thar 5-door. Gearbox options will include a 6-speed manual and a torque converter gearbox.
Design changes?
We have spotted the Thar 5-door several times in various parts of the country. From the images, it is clear that the Thar 5-door will look more or less similar to the 3-door version. The major differentiator will be the increased wheelbase. The production version could see a new grille, bumpers and headlamp design.
Thar 5-door engine – Added features?
Mahindra is expected to add more features to the Thar 5-door. However, this could not get the creature comforts we see on the Scorpio-N. Mahindra could instead give it more practical features like a bigger glove box, dead pedal, rear wiper & defogger and reverse parking camera.
Launch and pricing
Mahindra has been quite tightlipped about the launch timeline of the Thar 5-door. According to our estimation, Mahindra could unveil the SUV in the second half of 2023. The launch could happen in late 2023 or early 2024. What about the pricing? We expect a starting price of Rs 18 lakhs (on-road, Mumbai), considering the extra space, powerful engine and new features.
