Thar 5-door to be cheaper than Scorpio-N?
If you are looking to buy a big SUV and your eyes are staring at the Scorpio-N, Mahindra is likely to bring the 5-door version of the Thar which could be worth considering. Though the Thar lies in the lifestyle offroader segment, the 5-door iteration can offer you the comfort of a modern-day SUV. Let’s take a look at how the upcoming Thar 5 door can be a considerable option over the ‘Big Daddy’.
Upcoming Thar 5-door -What to expect?
Mahindra has begun testing its Thar 5 door on Indian grounds. From the images, we can spot that the wheelbase has increased to house the rear door. This would ultimately help in easy ingress and egress for the bench rear seat. This would make the upcoming Thar 5-door more spacious and practical. Though there are fewer chances of it getting a 3rd row setup, Mahindra could try to give it as this new Thar is to be based on the same chassis as the Scorpio-N.
If we talk about the equipment list of the 5-door version, it is likely to increase as many primary car buyers would be considering this one. Unlike the current selling car which is a proper lifestyle offroader, can’t be used as a daily road runner for family chores. So, Mahindra might give the upcoming car a bigger glove box, dead pedal, reverse parking camera, rear wiper and defogger, a more practical single boot door, and other major updates that are absent in the 3-door model.
New Suspension
Now that we know the 5-door model is likely to share its underpinnings with the big daddy, reports also suggest that it will be getting the pentalink suspension at the rear. This setup is likely to be derived from the Scorpio-N which has proven to reduce body roll. However, Mahindra can tweak the chassis and the suspension to keep off-road capabilities at priority for the Thar 5-door.
Specifications
We are getting familiar with the Thar 5 door. Many points suggest that it is likely to adopt majority of Scorpio-N’s DNA. This further leads us to which engine can we expect in it. If we consider its chassis and now the added weight (rear seat, long wheelbase, larger body), giving it the 200 bhp and 370Nm of torque mStallion (2.0-litre petrol) and the 172bhp and 370Nm of torque mHaWk (2.2-litre diesel) could be an ideal workout.
What about transmission? Just like what we have seen in the Scorpio-N, the same setup can be expected in this one too. So, both engines could be available with a 6-speed manual and a torque converter.
Upcoming Thar 5-door -Price and Launch
Mahindra can bring the Thar 5 door sometime around the next year. Why do we think so? As Maruti is likely to launch the Jimny 5-door, the arrival of this one could create a enticing fight. What about pricing? We can expect the starting price to be Rs 18 lakh (on-road prices) as we are getting a powerful set of engines, more practicality as well as more features.
