Mahindra XUV700 created a buzz like no other Indian car. This car revolutionized its segment with features like ADAS, high beam assist, premium interiors, high-end infotainment system, and more. Available with a starting price of Rs 16.12 lakh (on-road, Mumbai), it offers a great overall package. The XUV700 is the current leader of its segment but a new upcoming Maruti car could steal its crown. Which is this new XUV700 rival? Let’s take a look.

Maruti to focus on premium cars

Maruti has established its name in the affordable hatchback segment. With an impressive portfolio in this category, India’s largest carmaker now wants to offer more premium products to its buyers. For this exact thing, Maruti brought the Grand Vitara under its partnership with Toyota. Starting with a price tag of Rs 12.28 lakh (on-road, Mumbai), it takes on the likes of some established products like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and more. The introduction of this car has kickstarted Maruti’s direction to offer more premium cars.

Maruti Upcoming car under Toyota partnership

We are aware that Maruti and Toyota share their cars not only in India but on a global level. So, we see shared products like the Baleno/Glanza, Grand Vitara/ Urban Cruiser HyRyder, Brezza/Urban Cruiser, and more. This type of arrangement is usually seen to benefit in various factors like sales, diversifying vehicle portfolios, creating a new buyer base, increasing market penetration, and more. It is exactly the reason why both these brands are doing it.

The latest example is the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser HyRyder. Now, if we think from Maruti’s perspective, it is not stopping at the Grand Vitara and wants to bring even more premium products. To execute this, Maruti might create an all-new product or just share a car with Toyota. Doing the latter thing could save huge R&D costs and now with the Innova HyCross set to unveil later this year, this might be the perfect premium car for Maruti.

Why Maruti could do this?

The pricing of the first ever EV from Maruti could be around Rs 25 lakh. How does it relate to this? So, with Innova HyCross, Maruti could perfectly fill the gap that currently exists between the Grand Vitara and its new EV. This would create more sense for buyers. If we remove the Innova from the picture, buyers could be skeptical about getting a Rs 25 lakh Maruti EV. The Maruti Innova could be launched with a pricing of Rs 18lakh (ex-showroom) sitting apt between these two cars.

Maruti Upcoming car variants

Maruti’s iteration would be similar to the Innova HyCross. Both these cars would be based on the same platform sharing the same engine options. However, we can have a similar variant lineup like the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser HyRyder. In such cases where a product is shared, the pricing is favorable for that brand which offers most of the technology in that particular car. For reference, the AWD technology is developed by Maruti so we see the variants of Grand Vitara are priced on the lower side if we compare to similar variants of the Urban Cruiser HyRyder. Moreover, if Maruti borrows a ready product from Toyota, it would be priced higher in comparison to Toyota.

Maruti Upcoming car – XUV700 rival?

If Maruti plans to bring its Innova sister car, it is highly likely to be sometime after Toyota’s launch. Talking about the car, it could get features like a panoramic sunroof, ADAS, spacious rear seats, an updated infotainment system, and more. What about engine? It is likely to get 2 engine options. A 2.0-litre petrol strong hybrid engine and another 2.0-litre pure petrol. One thing to note here is that it would be based on the Urban Cruiser Hyryder’s strong hybrid 1.5-litre Atkinson’s cycle engine with an added 4th cylinder. The other pure petrol could get Maruti’s mild hybrid technology to boost its fuel economy figures.

Taking this into consideration, Toyota might promote its own strong hybrid technology and offer it in the majority of the variants. On the other hand, Maruti might keep the strong hybrid for limited top-end variants and offer its mild hybrid tech more aggressively. This similar pattern is observed in their current shared product lineup.
