We are aware of the fact that more stringent BS6 Phase 2 emission norms will be coming into action from April 2023. This could lead to the eradication of diesel engines from car segments like hatchbacks and sedans. The reason is the increased manufacturing costs due to the additional engine components like ECU-controlled camshafts, better ‘SCR’ exhaust systems, etc. So, if you are planning to buy a diesel car under these car segments in India, we think it’s a perfect time before they get discontinued. Let’s have a look at the diesel cars that could get discontinued in future.

According to reports, Hyundai could discontinue the 1.5-litre diesel option from its premium hatchback. As it has got two different petrol engine options in the car, upgrading the 1.5-litre diesel according to the stricter Phase 2 norms would be an expensive affair. Also, stricter RTO rules in some states, increased prices, etc have led to buyers going for petrol engines. However, if you are a diesel head and want the power of 99bhp and 240Nm from the i20’s diesel, get it soon before it gets discontinued.

Tata Altroz

Another premium hatchback is from our homegrown automaker which can bid adieu later next year. As per the sales figures, the diesel variant contributes only 20% of the total sales of Altroz. The rest of the 80% is from its two petrol engine options. This gives us an outlook on why Tata could discontinue Altroz’s diesel. The increased manufacturing cost for diesel would even increase the price difference between petrol and diesel. For reference, the ‘XE Plus Petrol costs Rs 7.80 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) and the ‘XE Plus Diesel costs Rs 9.40 lakh (on-road, Mumbai), a price difference of Rs1.6 lakh.

There are reports that suggest Honda might pull the plug off its 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine. As per the brand, it is hard as well as expensive to meet the RDE (Real Driving Emissions) norms that would be applicable from the next year. These RDE norms would mandate automakers to meet the emission norms not only in the testing facility but also in real-world driving conditions. The addition of the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, and upgraded ECUs would mount the costs of production resulting in higher prices. As Honda’s majority of its sales are from its efficient petrol, it could be a better option to discontinue rather than investing high costs.

Honda Amaze

Honda’s 1.5-litre diesel is used in the Amaze, City and WR-V. It was first introduced in the year 2013 with the Amaze. The current generation car continues to get the same engine that makes 98bhp and 200Nm of torque. You also have a 5-speed manual as well as a CVT automatic gearbox. Unlike the other Honda cars, it is the only one that gets a diesel automatic from the lineup.

The WR-V has tasted its success by completing the 1 lakh sales milestone since its first launch in 2017. Now, with the competition offering much more in almost every category, WR-V feels a step-down. It is basically a crossover version of Honda’s premium hatchback -Jazz. It also gets the 1.5-litre I-DTEC diesel engine which comes mated to a 5-speed manual. Though you don’t get a choice of automatic, the diesel WR-V does offer a proper balance of performance and crossover styling.
