New Hyundai Verna to get a bigger engine?

The Hyundai Verna has been an iconic sedan in the Indian market. It has done well to go toe to toe with the segment leader, Honda City. However, of late Verna is losing its charm. It’s not like only Verna is facing this issue, it is the entire sedan segment, which is facing an existential crisis. The launch of Slavia and Virtus has re-ignited this segment, and Hyundai wants to continue the momentum. It is working on the new Verna, which will be much bigger and grander than the current model. New Hyundai Verna – Why a new engine? 

The Hyundai Verna currently comes with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. None of these engines are underpowered. Then why will Hyundai give the Verna a bigger engine? The new Hyundai Verna will be bigger than the current model. With the new Verna, Hyundai would mostly be looking to fill the gap between the Verna and the now-discontinued Elantra. So both the engines will feel underpowered on this new Verna.

What can Hyundai do then? It can give the new Verna the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine that powers the Creta. This engine is capable of producing 138bhp & 242Nm of torque. Hyundai could even tune it differently for the new Verna. This new engine will also help Verna to take on the Skoda Slavia and Skoda Virtus, which also come with a 1.5-litre-turbo petrol engine. 

What else do we know?

The spy shots of the Verna have revealed that it could get a design similar to the new i20. Also, as mentioned above, the Verna will be bigger than the current model. These bigger dimensions should translate into better legroom and second-row space. In the interiors, we can expect Hyundai to give it a more soft-touch material to increase its premiumness. What about features? Being a Hyundai car, we can expect a plethora of features. Some of the expected features include a heads-up display, 360-degree camera and improved connected car technology.

Launch timeline

Hyundai is yet to officially confirm anything about the launch of the new Verna. However, the car has been spotted several times testing in India. These spy shots indicate that the car could be in the final stages of development. According to reports, Hyundai could unveil the car at the Auto Expo of 2023. The launch may happen a few months after the Auto Expo.
