Kia Carens serious threat to Innova Crysta?
Affordable MPVs are now being talked about more since Toyota halted bookings for diesel Crysta. Toyota Innova Crysta was extensively sold with its 2.4-litre diesel engine and was highly favored by Indian buyers. Now, with the Kia Carens on the free run with its 1.5-litre diesel engine, buyers have started to shift their approach from the Crysta. Carens vs Innova Crysta -Design
If we talk about the dimensions, Kia Carens measures 4,540mm in length, 1,800mm in width and 1,708mm in height. It has a ground clearance of 195mm and a wheelbase of 2,780mm. The overall design is also modern and adapts Kia’s signature ‘Opposites United’ design language. Also, its design is more in tune with SUVs by maintaining its MPV practicality.
Talking about the Toyota here, it is 4,735mm in length, 1,830mm in width, and 1,795mm in height. It has a ground clearance of 178mm and sits on a wheelbase of 2,750mm. Both these cars are similar in dimensions wherein the Crysta here is a proper body-on-frame vehicle whereas the Carens is based on a modular monocoque platform. This major difference would also result in varied driving dynamics, safety, fuel economy, and off-road performance of both cars. Comparing the boot space with three rows up, Carens gets 216 litres of storage and Crysta gets 300 litres.

As Kia is known for its feature-rich cars, let’s talk first about the Carens. It gets features like a 10.25inch infotainment system, ambient lighting, connected car tech, bose sound system, TPMS, 6 airbags, all 4 disc brakes, and more.
Moving over to the Toyota, it is also fairly equipped but not at par with Kia. The Crysta gets an 8-inch infotainment system, 7 airbags, push-button start-stop, 8-way seat adjustment, puddle lamps, and more. However, it’s the Carens which is more loaded than the Toyota in terms of features.
Engine Specifications
Kia sells the Carens with 3 engine options. It gets 1.5-litre petrol that produces 113 bhp and 142 Nm of torque. Another petrol unit is 1.4-litre turbo petrol which makes 138bhp and 240 Nm of torque. Moreover, you also get a 1.5-litre diesel engine making 113 bhp and 250Nm of torque. Transmission options vary from a 6-Speed manual, DCT automatic, and torque converter AT.
Moving over to the Crysta, the diesel engine has been halted and now it’s only available with a 2.7-litre petrol engine. It produces 164bhp and 245Nm of torque and can be mated to a 5-speed manual or a torque converter AT. The unavailability of the diesel engine has created a major bummer for many buyers.
Pricing
As of now, we are aware of the fact that Crysta does not have a diesel engine. So, let’s start with the pricing of diesel Kia Carens. It starts at Rs 13.67 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) for the manual base variant and goes up to Rs 21.14 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) for the top AT ‘Luxury Plus’ model.
If we talk about the pricing of Crysta, starts at Rs 21.65 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) for the base variant and reaches up to Rs 28.60 lakh (on-road, Mumbai) for the top ‘ZX’ petrol automatic model.
Carens vs Innova Crysta – Conclusion
The availability of a diesel engine, extra features, and economical pricing are major plus points of the Carens. Kia would also offer you more mileage but the ride quality and comfort would not be at par with Crysta. Moreover, Toyota’s renowned bulletproof reliability is something that is second to none. Talks about the launch of the Innova Hybrid are also in full swing which could accumulate a buyer base for the petrol Innova. If you are willing to go for an affordable MPV, Carens could be your car of choice. On the other hand, you should wait for the Innova Hybrid if you are standing still on your decision of buying a Toyota.
