Tata is in no mood at slowing down the expansion of its electric portfolio. Developed specifically for its electric range, it has developed a special ‘Tata Passenger Electric Mobility’ division. Under this division, it is planning to diversify its EV range with new products coming on the way. Today it has launched the Tiago EV, the most affordable EV you can buy. However, Tata already has its Tigor EV which is quite similar to the Tiago EV. So, how could this new EV hatch stand against its own sedan sibling? Let’s find it in our Tata Tiago EV vs Tigor EV article.

Tata Tigor EV has identical dimensions as its ICE sibling. It measures 3,993mm in length, 1,677mm in width and has a height of 1,532mm. The ground clearance is 172mm. On the other hand, the Tiago EV is also the same as its ICE counterpart. It is 3,765mm in length, 1,677mm in width & 1,535mm mm in height. It sits on a wheelbase of 2,400mm. Both these cars are similar in terms of dimensions, however, the Tigor justifies its increase in length due to its bigger boot space.

Design and features

In terms of design, both cars being from the same manufacturer would have similar design upgrades. As of now, we were familiar with the Tigor EV but now as the Tiago EV is launched, we can further differentiate them in detail. Currently, the Tigor EV gets the EV-specific signature teal blue colour and EV badging across the car. The front look is identical to the regular car, however, it gets a different grille and bumper design. In the interior, it gets fabric upholstery with dual-tone interiors.

Talking about the newly launched Tiago EV, it gets similar design upgrades as we saw on the Tigor EV. It gets the EV badging, blue inserts below the grille, and EV-specific changes on the car. However, we can also spot some other changes that are different from the Tigor EV. It gets a different wheel design as well as a sky blue & red colour which is not currently available on the Tigor EV. On the inside, it gets leatherette seats that make it appear more premium than its sedan sibling. In terms of features, it gets cruise control, multi-level regen, etc which is not available in the Tigor EV.

Although Tata has confirmed that we could see some upgrades on the feature list of the Tigor EV. Tata would likely roll out a software update for the Tigor EV soon.

Tata Tigor EV is the electrified version of the regular Tigor. It has got the tried and tested Ziptron technology that we have earlier seen on the Nexon EV. Talking about the Tigor specifications, it gets a 26 kWh battery pack that makes 74bhp and 170Nm of torque. What about range? The claimed range of the car is 306kms. You can charge your Tigor EV with the CCS2 charging standard. With a regular 15A charging point, you can charge it from 0 to 80% in 8 hours and 45 minutes. However, with a 25kW DC fast charger, it completes the same charge in 65 minutes.

Tata has launched the Tiago EV with two battery pack options. It is based on the same Ziptron tech but has different specifications. The first option gets a 19.2kWh battery pack with a 45kWh motor. It generates a torque output of 105Nm with a claimed MIDC range of 250kms. Talking about the second option, it is a bigger battery pack at 24kWh with a 55kWh motor. The range power figures are also increased at 316kms MIDC claimed range and 114Nm of torque.

Both EVs get 1,60,000 km / 8 years (whichever is early) of warranty on the battery pack and motor.

Moving on to the latest entrant, the Tiago EV starts with an introductory price of Rs 8.49 lakh (ex-showroom prices). These prices will be applicable for the first 10 thousand customers. Moreover, analysing the demand for a secondary EV from existing Nexon EV owners, Tata has reserved 2 thousand Tiago EVs for them. Tata offers the Tiago EV in XE, XT, XZ+, XZ+ Tech LUX trim levels. You can get the smaller 19.2kWh battery pack option only in the XE and XT variants. On the other hand, the bigger 24kWh battery pack can be obtained in all variants except the base XE.

Which one should you buy?

Both the cars are from the same brand and offer their own USPs. On the side of the Tigor EV, it offers you more space in the boot compared to the hatch Tiago EV. However, in terms of features, the hatchback gets a longer list. The interiors are also plusher in the hatch with leatherette upholstery. It depends on what suits best for your purpose. If you are willing to pay a slightly high amount for the benefits of boot and power, Tigor might be the right choice for you. On the other hand, the Tiago EV offers a great balance between features and power. It is less powerful than the Tigor but if your driving is largely in the cities with utmost traffic, Tiago’s hatch proportions would be the right choice.

  • Motor power figures are in the wrong unit. It should not be KWh but instead “PS” as mentioned in the Tata website.
