Honda is a brand that has become synonymous with two-wheelers in our market. The Honda Activa is the brand’s best-seller and identity in India. However, the electric craze is catching up. We have already seen the rise of Ola and Ather. So when are we going to see a Honda electric 2-wheeler? Honda seems to have partially answered this question concerning the Indian market. Recently, Honda laid out its plan for carbon neutrality. So what is this plan, and how will it affect India? In today’s article, let’s talk about Honda electric plan.

Honda has already entered a pact with KTM, Piaggio and Kawasaki to develop a standardized battery architecture. However, yesterday it laid out its roadmap for its future EVs. Under this roadmap, Honda is set to bring several electric and flex-fuel two-wheelers by 2025. Honda has set sales target of 1 million units by 2025 and 3.5 million by 2030.

Model split up

Honda has also shared the model launch plan. Honda will be bringing electric commuters first. When will they launch? According to Honda, two models will be introduced between 2024 & 2025. Next up are electric mopeds and bicycles. These two-wheelers come with restricted speed, and thus can be used unregistered & without a driving license. Honda plans to launch five such two-wheelers by 2024.

Taking a close look at their planned model line-up reveals that one of them looks very similar to the Activa whereas one looks similar to the Cliq. Now, Honda clearly knows that the Activa is a very important product and has even made its plans clear that an Activa electric would most definitely be a part of their EV plan. Honda has already confirmed that it plans to entry the electric space in the country by early 2023. What could their first product be? Not can be confirmed yet, but taking into consideration that Honda has been testing the Benly e in India could be taken as a hint.

Other EVs and plans

So we have talked about commuters and mopeds, how about a performance two-wheeler EV? Honda is calling them ‘Fun EVs’. It has three products planned, but for now, these EVs are only planned for the Japanese, European and US markets. Apart from all this, Honda is also working on solid-state batteries. What’s so special about them? These batteries offer a significant higher density, while also reducing the risk of fires and accidents.
