Mahindra has just unveiled its first electric SUV – the XUV400 and there are multiple new larger SUVs coming up too. However, the Indian utility vehicle manufacturer is also looking at getting smaller size EVs too. At the unveil event of the XUV400, we heard Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director, Mahindra & Mahindra mention, “Recently, we unveiled 5 electric SUVs that are in the size of 4.3 metre onwards. We are working on more new products in the 4 to 4.2 metres space.” In today’s article, we will be talking about Mahindra affordable electric SUVs.

Mahindra’s plan

Rajesh Jejurikar confirmed that these new SUVs will be built on the XUV400 platform itself. The launch timeline or any more details about these SUVs haven’t been shared, however the new XUV400 itself is 4.2 metre length SUV, so we can expect smaller size SUVs to be coming as well. Mahindra had unveiled the eKUV100 a while ago and that micro SUV never saw the day light of production. With regards to these new SUVs, we reckon the idea will be to build more affordable vehicles.

The XUV400 shares its platform with the SsangYong Tivoli, a South Korean automaker which had been a part of the Mahindra Group. The XUV300 is the conventional petrol and diesel engine powered compact SUV that is also based on the same platform and shares most of the design elements with the newly unveiled XUV400 electric. This is one of the most safest platform in the country and the XUV300 has scored a five-star in GlobalNCAP crash test. So, we are expecting safer electric SUVs from the Indian utility manufacturer.

Mahindra affordable electric SUVs- What else do we know?

The XUV400 platform has been tested to hold a 40kW battery pack and if the vehicle will be smaller in size – we do expected a similar or smaller battery pack size. The idea shall be to target closer to Rs 10 lakh price category. When could these SUVs be expected? Not anytime soon (not the in the next 1-2 years)  — as Mr Jejurikar confirmed that no new electric SUVs will be churned out from the XUV400 platform. What will be coming in after the XUV400 is the XUVe8, which is the next large size electric SUV based on the XUV700 – however this will be about two years from now.

More Affordable EVs!

Speaking of affordable EVs, even Tata Motors announced an all new affordable EV in their current line-up. This EV is the Tiago EV, which could become the most affordable EV in the country. After the Tiago EV, we can even expect the Punch EV or the Altroz EV. Punch EV will be a stronger proposition – considering the Punch is already such a popular product
