The compact SUV segment is one of the most popular segments in India. It is popular due to the sweet spot where its products sit in. Moreover, high ground clearance and easy manoeuvrability of these SUVs attracts a lot of customers. One car that has been bossing this segment as of late has been the Tata Nexon. Tata has been proactively updating Nexon to keep the competition away. Another car in this segment is the Mahindra XUV300. Currently, the XUV300 is nowhere near the sales of the Nexon, but Mahindra is set to give the XUV300 a major update that could change the game. This update will give the XUV300 a dominance in its segment. In today’s article, let’s talk about this Tata Nexon alternative.

What’s the major update?

According to rumours, Mahindra could introduce the 1.2-litre mStallion turbo-petrol engine on the XUV300. Mahindra wants to make it a special variant called the ‘Sportz’ variant. The mStallion engines are developed in-house by Mahindra with direct injection and overboost technologies. Transmission options could include a manual gearbox option. What about the current 1.2-litre engine? It will continue to be used in the normal variants.

What is so special about this variant/engine? With this engine onboard, the XUV300 is said to develop around 128bhp & 230Nm of torque. These power figures will give it a big edge over the competition.

Other expected changes

Mahindra had displayed the Sportz variant at the Auto Expo of 2020. The Sportz variant gets subtle cosmetic changes over the normal XUV300. What are these changes? It gets Sportz vinyl with a chequered flag design. Could we see this in the production version? We will have to wait for that. Another change could be the red brake callipers highlighting its sporty nature. Coming to the interiors, it gets more red highlights on the steering, infotainment system and seats. What about the features? It is mostly expected to retain the current features from the top model.

There is no official confirmation from Mahindra regarding the XUV300 Sportz, but some strong rumours are hinting about its launch in the coming weeks. According to reports, Mahindra could launch the Sportz variant somewhere around the launch of the XUV400. What about the pricing? Currently, the pricing of the petrol variants of the XUV300 starts from Rs 9.91 lakh and goes to Rs 15.69 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Mahindra will most likely offer this engine on the higher variants of the XUV300. The Sportz variants could see a price hike of Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 over the regular ones.
