The lifestyle SUV segment has gathered pace in the country, thanks to the Mahindra Thar and the Force Gurkha. Thee lifestyle SUVs offer the perks of serious off-road capabilities, practicality, and rugged body design. However, this segment is expected to receive a major boost. How? The reason would be Maruti Jimny. Keeping in check the demand and requirements, Maruti is said to launch the 5-door version of the Jimny in India in the coming months. The highly-anticipated Jimny could prove to be a tough competition, thanks to its economical pricing (expected), vast service network, and the availability of reliable engines. Talking about engines, today we discuss the likely engine options for the Maruti Jimny 5-door.

Maruti Jimny 5-door – engine options

Maruti is expected to offer its ‘AllGrip Pro’ in the country, which is a serious 4×4 system. Now, this setup could be mated to an all-new 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine. This engine is available in the foreign markets and could make its way in India in the Jimny. Having the advantage of a turbocharger, this engine is capable of producing 127bhp & 235Nm of torque. Being a petrol-powered engine and that too with a turbocharger coupled to it, the fuel-efficiency will mostly take a hit. Now, as we all know that Maruti maintains its forte in this department. So, Maruti could induce this engine with its mild hybrid tech to further enhance the mileage figures.

Other than this, a regular 4×2 drivetrain could also be made available. This option would mostly be suitable for people who do not go for off-roading but want an economical lifestyle SUV for regular use. The newly updated K15C that we are getting in the Brezza, Ertiga & XL6 could be offered with this setup. Power figures could be similar to the Brezza; 101bhp & 136Nm of torque. Along with a regular manual gearbox, there are chances that it could come with a six-speed automatic torque convertor gearbox to compete with the Mahindra Thar automatic.

Features and Design

The Jimny 5-door would attract a new segment of buyers as the Mahindra Thar & Force Gurkha are only available with a 3-door setup as of now. The 5-door Maruti Jimny is touted to have a wheelbase of 2550mm (300mm increased over the standard car) to house the second-row seats. With the increased wheelbase, the legroom in the second-row is expected to see a boost. There are also some speculations that Maruti could launch a 7-seater version along with a 6-seater version.

Overall, the design cues are expected to be similar to the 3-door version. Moving on to the features, Suzuki Connect for connected car tech, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, auto AC, all electric windows, steering mounted controls, push-button start could be made available.

Launch

Maruti is extensively studying the Indian market, justifying the delay of the Jimny. Indian buyers often tend to go for more value-for-money picks, so Maruti could fit the 5-door Jimny in the affordable spot. To be sold under the NEXA-premium flagship dealers, the car is anticipated to be unveiled during the Auto Expo 2023.
