EVs are quickly becoming mainstream across the world. New buyers have started considering EVs as their next as well as first car. Maruti & Toyota have been quite reluctant to enter the EV segment. However, the changing mindset has forced both brands to start working on their EVs as well. Both the brands are closely working on EVs for the Indian market. We have extensively talked about the Maruti mid-size EV, but what about Toyota’s iteration? In today’s article, we will talk about Toyota’s special SUV for India.

Dimensions

Toyota SUV

Unlike other manufacturers, Toyota and Maruti are not looking to build a compact SUV. Rather, their SUV will be bigger. For reference, dimension-wise, it is expected to be bigger and wider than Hyundai Creta. It might be similar in size to the newly-unveiled Toyota Urban Cruiser HyRyder and Maruti Grand Vitara. As it will be a grounds-up EV, it will mostly come with a long wheelbase to fit in the battery pack.

Toyota SUV – Specifications

Toyota SUV

Toyota’s SUV will be based on the brand’s 27PL platform, a skateboard platform derived from Toyota’s 40PL global platform. What about the motor and battery? According to reports, Maruti’s mid-size electric SUV will come with two-wheel and four-wheel drive options. The four-wheel-drive variant is expected to come with a dual motor and a 59kWh battery pack, giving it an approximate range of 500km. The two-wheel-drive option will mostly come with a single motor and a lower 48kWh battery pack, which will give it a range of 400km. What about the Toyota SUV? We can expect the same in Toyota’s iteration.

This Toyota SUV will have a high level of localisation. According to reports, Maruti and Toyota will also locally manufacture the battery packs. A thing to note is that Maruti will still have to import the Lithium-ion cells from China. But even the local assembling of the battery pack will give a major cost advantage to Toyota and Maruti.

Currently, Toyota and Maruti are focusing more on their CNG and hybrid cars. What about the pricing? This SUV is expected to be priced quite aggressively to take on the competition.
