Globally, the pickup segment is one of the most profitable ones. However, we haven’t seen the same enthusiasm from buyers in the country. But, with the growth of the SUV market, the pickup segment is also expected to grow. Toyota launched its iconic Hilux in India keeping this in mind. To challenge the Hilux, Mahindra has a product in its global portfolio which it does not sell in its home ground. We are referring to the Mahindra Scorpio Getaway. The Scorpio pickup can benefit from the popularity of the Scorpio Classic and can definitely prove to be a value-for-money proposition for pickup buyers. In today’s article, we will talk about the Mahindra Scorpio pickup.

Scorpio Pickup – Design

Scorpio Pickup

The Mahindra Scorpio Pickup (called the Pikup in global markets) gets a front design identical to the Scorpio Classic sold in India. We see the iconic bonnet scoop and the aggressive grille design. In the side profile, you will see major changes. The Scorpio Pickup comes in single and dual cab options. The single cab option offers a maximum loading capacity of 1200kg, while the dual cab has a loading capacity of 1000kg. What about the rear? The rear gets taillamps similar to the original Scorpio. To make it more appealing, Mahindra even sells a special variant called ‘Karoo’. This variant get black alloy wheels, Tonneau cover, rain deflectors and roll bar.

Note – We will be talking about the dual cab variants in this article only.

Specifications

Scorpio Pickup

The dual cab variant is 5175mm in length, 1820mm in width & 1915mm in height. It sits on a wheelbase of 3040mm and has a ground clearance of 210mm. However, we expect the double cab variant to be brought in for the passenger segment because of its VFM quotient.

The Scorpio pickup is powered by the familiar 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine capable of producing 138bhp & 320Nm of torque. The dual cab variant comes with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Drivetrain options include a 4×2 and a 4×4 option. The Scorpio Pickup gets 16-inch steel wheels as standard.

Since Mahindra is updating the Scorpio Classic now, we expect the same changes to be extended to the pickup as well if it comes here.

Scorpio Pickup – Features

Features have become the heart & soul of the car buying experience all around the world. The Scorpio Pickup also gets a decent amount of features. The dual cab cabin gets touchscreen infotainment and follow-me-home headlamps, multifunction steering wheel, 12V charging ports, infotainment system, AC and power windows. In terms of safety, we have ABS with EBD, a digital immobiliser and two airbags.

Will it come to India?

So coming to the important bit, will it come to India? There is no official confirmation from Mahindra, but earlier this year a Scorpio pickup was spotted testing in India. It was a left-hand drive variant, but according to reports, Mahindra is also testing the car for the domestic markets. Could Mahindra implement the changes of the Scorpio Classic facelift on the Scorpio Pickup? It could as it will invlove some minor exterior and interio changes. With the changes, the Scorpio Pickup could very well take on the Hilux. The exact timeline is yet to be revealed. A lot of it depends on the growth of the pickup segment and the ongoing chip shortage.
