Mahindra started selling EVs when no other major manufacturer was even looking at the segment. The brand sold cars like Reva and eVerito and was on the trajectory to become a reputable name in the EV market. However, the momentum was lost. A brand which had been working on EVs for so long and was expected to be the segment-leader, dipped. Mahindra had to thus take a step back and re-evaluate its complete strategy. And that is what the brand did. After long re-evaluation, the brand finally showcased eKUV100, eXUV300 and Funster concepts in the Auto Expo of 2020. The brand also revealed its plans of bringing ‘Born Electric’ EVs to the market. Born Electric EVs have been developed from scratch, meaning everything will be developed keeping an electric car in mind. So, what do we know about these new Mahindra electric cars so far and how will they shake the market? Everything in this article.

Mahindra’s Born EV Plan

Mahindra posted a teaser in February, teasing its three new upcoming EVs. However, these three EVs were to fall under the ‘Born Electric’ plan. Under this plan, the Born Electric division would develop electric platforms (Born Electric Platform), in-house battery packs and powertrains for the brand. Mahindra is Electric Scalable Modular Architecture range of battery packs for these EVs as well as existing ICE vehicles that will be converted to electric cars.

Mahindra is focusing on design and human interference for these EVs. Recently, the brand even partnered with Volkswagen to boost its EV plans. For now, both the brands have signed a partnering agreement to ‘evaluate the scope of collaboration’, however, the deal is expected to locked by the end of this year. Volkswagen will be aiding Mahindra in developing Born Electric EVs. The German automaker will be offering its MEB electric components (electric motors, battery systems, battery cells) to Mahindra. The benefit of using the MEB platform is that it allows carmakers to build their portfolio of electrified vehicles quickly and cost-effectively.

Mahindra will be unveiling the three Born Electric EVs next month. Moreover, the concepts that will be showcased are said to be the final models that will go into production.
