Hyundai is a manufacturer that has found great success in India. The major reason behind its early success had been its hatchback lineup. Its hatchbacks like the Santro, i10 and i20 found great success in our country. Then the SUV craze hit, and Hyundai started its onslaught of SUVs with the Creta. Now Hyundai wanted to maximise its sales with both SUVs and hatchbacks. So what did Hyundai do? It created a crossover version of the i20 called the i20 Active which was a very successful product. However, Hyundai had to discontinue the i20 Active when it launched the new-generation car. So could the i20 Active make a comeback? In today’s article, let’s talk about this Hyundai car that can make a comeback.

Case for its return

As mentioned above, Hyundai discontinued the i20 Active when it launched the new i20. When it was on sale, it was a popular car in its segment. The segment itself was popular with cars like the Volkswagen Polo Cross, Fiat Avventura and Toyota Etios Cross. But one by one, cars from this segment disappeared. So why does Hyundai want to reignite this segment? According to reports, Maruti is looking to make an entry here with the crossover version of the Baleno. Hyundai can definitely use this opportunity to outfox Maruti by launching the new-generation i20 Active.

History of i20 Active

Before we see what the new i20 Active could get, let’s understand the previous i20 Active. The i20 Active used to get cosmetic changes like black plastic cladding, roof rails, cornering lamps and aluminium skid plates. Were there any functional changes? The i20 Active had 20mm more ground clearance. In terms of engine options, it used to get a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.4-litre diesel engine.

As mentioned above, Hyundai could bring the i20 Active based on the new-generation hatchback. It would be an interesting prospect as the current i20 is a sporty car with a low-slung profile. So how could Hyundai incorporate the crossover traits? Hyundai can buff it out with new rugged bumpers and roofline. In terms of functionality, the new i20 gets a ground clearance of 170mm. Hyundai will have to add some more numbers to the ground clearance to make it a suitable crossover. Any mechanical changes are however not expected.

Pricing

As far as pricing is concerned, we expect the crossover to be Rs 60,000 to Rs 70,000 costlier than the regular variants.
