Mahindra has launched the 1.9-litre Scorpio starting at INR 10.6 lakhs (on-road) and the 1.9-litre XUV500 starting at INR 12.7 lakhs (on-road) in Delhi. This downsize of the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine to 1.99-litres was necessary due to the recent ban in Delhi on all diesel vehicles above 2.0-litre to help curb rising pollution levels.
Mahindra has achieved this by reducing the stroke of the pistons and have managed to achieve an engine capacity of 1.99-litre. Currently this downsized engine will be sold only in Delhi and NCR region where the ban is applicable.
The new engine develops 140bhp as opposed to 138bhp in the XUV500 and 330Nm of torque. The Scorpio now produces 120bhp as opposed to 118bhp earlier and a torque of 280NM. Mahindra also said it had begun the work on the downsized mHawk range as early as August 2014.
Both the cars are available in automatic and manual transmission and the same will continue with the new engine. The XUV is also said to be available in the AWD variant as well.
Customers in Delhi, NCR can now buy these SUVs that they were deprived of in the past few months. Mahindra id the first company to react with new engines after the ban was imposed by the apex court.
