This SUV will come with some segment-first features that will help it establish a strong position in the already cut-throat segment. What will this premium Maruti SUV offer? Everything in this article.

What is this premium Maruti SUV?

Maruti, along with Toyota, had been working on a mid-size SUV. Toyota has already unveiled its version of the mid-size SUV which the brand is calling the ‘Urban Cruiser HyRyder’. Now, with this SUV unveiled, we have a fair idea about what to expect from Maruti’s version. According to some rumours, Maruti could call it the ‘Vitara’. This is said to be the reason behind the brand removing ‘Vitara’ from the ‘Vitara Brezza’ moniker and just calling it ‘Brezza’. The SUV will come with a different exterior design with Maruti-specific bits. This will help in differentiating both cars. However, both of them are expected to share the same interior with minor differences in seating & upholstery.

Premium Maruti SUV – Specifications

This premium Maruti SUV will come based on the brand’s Global C platform. Powertrain is where Maruti will score a home-run. The SUV will offer mild hybrid and strong hybrid setups. The mild hybrid setup will be coming in from the brand itself whereas the strong hybrid setup will be borrowed from Toyota. The mild hybrid setup will be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 101bhp & 135Nm of torque. This engine will be made available with 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic torque converter gearboxes and is expected to make a feature like idle start-stop and torque-assist functions available.

As far as the strong hybrid setup is concerned, it will mostly come paired to a 1.5-litre, Atkinson cycle petrol engine which makes 91bhp & 122Nm of torque and an electric motor that makes 79bhp & 141Nm of torque. This setup will come mated to Toyota’s e-drive transmission. The Maruti SUV will be able to run on hybrid as well as pure EV modes. Now, one thing to note here is that the SUV will mostly come with all-wheel-drive setup as well (another segment-first feature) but this will only be made available with the mild-hybrid setup and that too with manual variants.
