Maruti’s latest car to get an update was the new Maruti Brezza. The Maruti Vitara Brezza was always a popular car in the compact SUV segment, but of late was facing the heat from newer competition cars. So, Maruti had to give it a major update, the result of which is the new Brezza. The new Brezza gets a refreshed design and lots of exciting features. Even before the launch, there were rumours that the new Brezza will get a factory-fitted CNG. With the car now launched and Maruti not making available a CNG option, the main question that arises is, when is the new Brezza CNG coming? In today’s article, we discuss exactly that.

First, let’s discuss WHY CNG?

Maruti does have a big void in its lineup with the absence of the diesel engine. Even with the upcoming emission norms, people still prefer diesel engines in the SUV segment. The major reason is diesel’s impressive mileage and torque figures. Still, Maruti seems pretty adamant that it will not bring back diesel engines. So, what else can Maruti do to bridge this gap? It is extensively working on hybrids and CNG options for all its cars. The new Brezza already comes with a mild hybrid setup. Offering CNG kit is another viable thing for the brand since it is cheaper to implement and is more cost-effective for the end user. This is why Maruti is working on giving the Brezza a CNG option in the coming future.

Any changes expected on the new Brezza CNG?

Other than the obvious addition of the CNG kit, what other changes could the Brezza get? Design-wise, we don’t expect any changes as the new Brezza already gets a host of new design updates. Only the boot will be compromised with the added CNG tank. What about the engine specifications? The CNG will be paired with the 1.5-litre which is currently capable of producing 101bhp & 136bhp of torque. Will the performance drop? Yes, power figures are expected to drop a bit when the engine is mated to the CNG setup. The only new element could be some CNG badges on the exterior.

Launch timeline and pricing

There is no official confirmation from Maruti regarding the Brezza CNG, but Maruti is set to give all its cars a CNG or hybrid option in the future. How are we sure of this? Very recently, CV Raman, company’s CTO revealed that there will be no ‘pure petrol’ powertrains available from the brand in the coming few years. So we could definitely be seeing the Brezza CNG in the future with chances of it entering the market sometime this year.

The Brezza could become the first compact SUV with a factory-fitted CNG kit. What about the price hike? We expect a price hike of Rs 50,000 to Rs 70,000, depending upon the variants.
