Maruti Suzuki is a high-volume seller in the Indian market. Most of its cars are best-selling models in their respective segments. Surprisingly, Maruti is looking to discontinue one of its premium cars. So, which car are we talking about? The car we are talking about is the Maruti S-Cross. The S-Cross is the brand’s C-segment competitor. As a product, it is quite a competent one, but it never took off against the mighty Hyundai Creta. Still, Maruti launched the new S-Cross in Italy, and there were hopes that it would bring it to India since the new one looked more promising. However, if new reports are to be believed, Maruti has rather decided to replace the S-Cross altogether. In today’s article, let’s talk about this Maruti’s premium car and why is it being replaced.

Why has the launch plan been cancelled?

The S-Cross was quite a competent product, but it struggled to pull in high sales. In June, Maruti sold only 697 units of the S-Cross, which is quite low in the C-Segment. For context, Hyundai sold 13,790 units of the Creta. Even with these low sales, there was a glimmer of hope that Maruti could bring the new S-Cross to India which was not-so-long-ago launched in Italy. But that hope has also been extinguished by these new reports. Instead, Maruti is looking to free-up production space for its new mid-size SUV, the Grand Vitara.

Maruti’s premium car – History of S-Cross

The S-Cross was launched in August 2015 as Maruti’s first premium SUV. It was the brand’s first product from its Nexa dealerships and was quite promising too. But, why did it eventually fail? The S-Cross was quite spacious and comfortable, but it’s crossover-like design was not appreciated by the customers. It also lacked an automatic gearbox for many years, which hampered its sales. By the time Maruti rectified its mistake, the S-Cross sales had gotten quite low. Also, the S-Cross lacked features compared to cars like the Hyundai Creta.

Which car will replace the S-Cross?

The S-Cross will be replaced by the much anticipated Maruti mid-size SUV, the Grand Vitara. Toyota has already unveiled its iteration called the Urban Cruiser HyRyder, and Maruti will be doing the same on 20th July. With this SUV, Maruti will be looking to rectify all the weak points it faced with the S-Cross. The mid-size SUV will have a more upright design giving it that SUV look and will also come loaded with features, something that the S-Cross did lack. Also, the S-Cross replacement will come loaded with features like strong hybrid tech and AWD to take on the Hyundai Creta.
