The Tata Safari needs no introduction in India. The older Safari is still a favourite among enthusiasts. Its newer generation has also taken the baton well but many people don’t consider the new one to be a proper successor to the older Safari. Why is it so? The main reason being the new Tata Safari misses out on a 4×4 system. This was one element that made the Safari so capable. So will the new Safari ever get a 4×4? In today’s article, we discuss its possibility.

Why does Tata Safari need a 4×4?

As mentioned above, the Tata Safari has always been considered as a proper off-roader. For its part, the new Safari is a decent off-roader, even though it is a front-wheel-drive car. But still, nothing can match the capabilities of a four-wheel-drive or AWD car. This is the reason why a minute chunk of buyers has been demanding a 4×4 system on the Safari.

Tata’s point of view

Tata has stated that it has no foreseeable plans to introduce 4×4 in the near future. The major reason behind being the lack of demand for 4WD cars. As mentioned above, it is just a minute chunk of buyers that will actually buy a Safari 4×4 even though everyone demands for it. So it wouldn’t make business sense for Tata to invest so much for a niche audience. This investment will make the Safari lot more expensive than the competition which Tata would not want to do.

Tata has said that for now, it doesn’t consider a 4×4 or AWD system for the Safari. But it can be considered in the future depending on the change in the mindset. For now, Tata seems to be prioritising developing a petrol engine for the Safari. Also, Tata is said to be working on a proper off-roading system for its future cars like the Sierra EV.
