Tata has revived the micro-SUV segment in India by launching the Punch. It is a five-seater micro-SUV. The main motive behind launch of the Punch was to target buyers with a low budget who like the SUV body style. Now, Hyundai is planning to enter this segment as it currently has only one player. So in this article, we will discuss this upcoming Rs 6 lakhs Hyundai SUV that would rival the Tata Punch.

What does Hyundai currently have?

Rs 6 lakhs Hyundai SUV

Hyundai already has a small SUV in the Korean market, known as the Casper. However, Hyundai has decided to not launch this car in the Indian market because of its dimensions as well as the low-powered engine. This category of cars is called Kei cars in some Asian markets. The Casper is a very small car which would have not qualified as an SUV if it had to take on the Punch. So keeping this point in mind, the carmaker has started working on a India-specific micro-SUV codenamed ‘Ai3’. It is touted to be a perfect rival for the Tata Punch.

The Hyundai Ai3 would share its engine and chassis with the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios. We expect this SUV to come powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. It is hard to comment anything about the diesel engine availability as some rumours state that Hyundai is planning to discontinue their small capacity diesel engines. With that being said, a Diesel engine would surely be welcome since the Tata Punch currently lacks one.

Hyundai is very well known for making feature-rich cars. The Hyundai Ai3 on similar lines is expected to be a feature-rich micro-SUV. It is expected that this SUV might get all the features the Grand i10 Nios gets like ABS, EBD, front dual airbags, an 8.0-inch infotainment system, and some added features in Blue Link connected car technology.

The Hyundai Ai3 is said to see a launch in 2023. We expect it to start with an approximate price of Rs 6 lakhs (ex-showroom). The Tata Punch could really see its sales hurt once this SUV launches in the market. Would you be interested in a product like this or are you content with the Tata Punch?
