For many years, rhe Toyota Innova has enjoyed a stronghold in the MPV segment. It is in true terms one of Toyota’s bread & butter model in India along with the Fortuner. But in recent times, it has started facing tough competition from new-age seven-seater cars like the Maruti Ertiga/XL6, Kia Carens, Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari and MG Hector Plus. To tackle this, Toyota is taking a completely new route with the Innova. Traditionally, Toyota Innova has been known for its reliability & powerful engines, especially the diesel engine. However, the brand is now set to bring a new Innova with significant changes to Innova’s core. It has already been spotted testing in India and Thailand. New platform
The new Innova will be based on Toyota’s TNGA platform. So what does it mean? The important point is that the new Toyota Innova will come based on a monocoque chassis rather than the conventional ladder-on-frame base. This is expected to make the Innova lighter by a considerable margin which is in turn expected to increase its fuel-efficiency. A monocoque-based car is expected to seee a slight improvement in safety as well thanks to the improvement to structural rigidity. Will there be any dimension change? Yes, the new Innova is touted to be shorter than the current model but will up make for it with a bigger wheelbase.
Engine options
So will Toyota change the engine options? One of the biggest surprises is that reportedly Toyota will not offer a diesel engine with the new Innova. Instead, Toyota will be giving the new MPV a hybrid system. This hybrid system is expected to come paired with a 2.0-litre petrol engine. Toyota’s new hybrid system is more efficient than the earlier version and could deliver mileage figures better than what the diesel engine offers. So what do you think about Toyota’s move?

The new Innova is expected to follow a different design language when compared to the current Innova. From the spy shots, we can see that the new Innova will get a more rounded design. Toyota seems to be giving it a more SUVish like design, like the Corolla Cross, which is based on the same platform. We expect the new Innova to look more modern when compared to the currently-available Innova.
What will happen to current Innova?
Toyota will not be discontinuing the current Innova when it launches the new model. The current Innova has its USPs like ladder-on-frame chassis and diesel engine, which Toyota uses to attract more commercial & fleet buyers. The new Innova will be focused more towards private buyers with modern features and looks.

So when is the new Innova coming? The new Innova seems to be in its final stages of development since Toyota is already testing the car. According to reports, Toyota could launch the new Innova before Diwali this year. As far as pricing is concerned, we expect it to be positioned below the currently-available Innova in order to target private buyers more aggressively.
