Tata Altroz has made quite an impact in the premium hatchback space. The car consistently snatches sales from its most fiercest rivals, the Maruti Baleno and the Hyundai i20. Now, what is we tell you that there is a car from a segment below that of the Altroz, that could really pose a threat to the Tata hatchback. What is it you may ask? We are talking about the Swift here. However, it is not the ordinary Swift being talked about here. We are referring to the Maruti Suzuki Swift Sport, which can pose a serious threat for the Altroz. Now, how you may ask? This is exactly what we discuss in this article regarding the Maruti Altroz competition. Read on the whole thing to get a better idea of the case at hand.

Design

The current generation Swift is already a sporty, attractive looking machine. However, the Swift Sport is even sportier and aggressive. The Swift Sport gets a massive blacked-out front grille and more aggressive looking bumpers. New, mean-looking set of alloy wheels further enhance the sporty look. At the rear, it gets sporty bumpers coupled with twin-tip exhaust.

Interior and Features

The Swift Sport gets sporty interiors with red inserts on the inside. Red inserts add to the sportiness. If brought to India, we expect Maruti to load the Swift Sport with the new 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and Suzuki Connect that we see on the new Baleno.

Maruti Altroz competition – Engine

Maruti Altroz competition

This is where the Swift Sport can actually pose a threat to the Tata Altroz. Globally, the Swift Sport gets a 1.4-litre Boosterjet turbo-petrol engine. This engine makes 138bhp & 230Nm of torque. In comparison, the Altroz’s i-Turbo variants make 108bhp & 140Nm of torque. With this Boosterjet engine onboard, the Swift Sport does command respect, at least on paper. Does this engine command respect in real world as well? We can only tell that if we ever get to lay our hands on the Swift Sport.

BONUS – The word is that Maruti could be bringing this engine to the new Creta competition and their mid-size SUV (with re-tuning expected).

Maruti Altroz competition – Pricing & Launch

Maruti Altroz competition

Maruti sells Baleno with only one engine option and that is a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated Dualjet petrol engine. Whereas other competitors like the Tata Altroz and Hyundai i20 get turbo-petrol as well as diesel engine options. So Maruti could plan to bring a powerful hatchback with turbo-petrol engine to compete with other products even further and the Swift Sport perfectly fits the bill. So, will Maruti launch it in India? Although the car has been spotted testing quite a few times on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, it is still not clear if Maruti is planning to launch it here. Maruti could either be testing the car for a launch or could just be undertaking component-testing for its future products.

As far as pricing is concerned, IF Maruti decides to launch it here, we expect it to come with a price tag of somewhere around Rs 12 lakhs (on-road, Mumbai) to majorly undercut the competition (Altroz i-Turbo, Hyundai i20 N Line). Would you consider this if it launches in India?
