The Maruti Ciaz 2018 is here. It will an updated exterior design, updated interior and even changes to the engines as well. The most premium looking Maruti is due to get its update and in China it has been launched. The images reveal the changes it is bound to get in India too. This is Maruti’s strongest product in this segment, after failures with the Baleno sedan and the SX4, this has got things moving. Recently, Maruti had moved the Ciaz to the Nexa range.
There are high expectations from many buyers on this new sedan. The buyers are looking forward for changes such as more premium appeal, more exterior and interior features. Some of the most commonly asked questions to us are sunroof, cruise control and even something like HDMI input. There are many enthusiasts who are hoping for a bigger set of petrol and diesel engines too.
Maruti will look at the need of the segment and it seems they will get things in that manner. For instance, we doubt if the SHVS will continue on the diesel as this makes it an expensive buy and almost equivalent to the new Verna 2017. The petrol is a lot more affordable but could they look at upgrading it and offering more features? Read further to know more.

There shall not be a major change in the pricing. The major reasons being, this segment is highly competitive and at the moment, the diesel engine is expensive due to GST on hybrids. The pricing will drop only if the hybrid is discontinued or the government changes its policy for hybrid vehicles. It is a tad too early to comment on it. The chances to get a new engine are very miniscule.
Maruti Ciaz 2017 also looked stylish. The Ciaz seems a lot more premium and upmarket than any of its siblings. The broad front grille with chrome on it, followed by pulled back headlamps. Maruti has d=done a stunning job with the design. Where the sedan stands is its road presence and the fact that it is longer than the rest of the competition. The Ciaz does stand out in the crowd, and looks like a bigger sedan from its side profile.
Now moving to the rear, there is a resemblance to its biggest competitor Honda City. The new Nexa blue just makes the Ciaz look more rich and classy. The Ciaz can be a good inspiration for many of the Maruti’s upcoming designs. This one does look perfect for the Nexa experience family. This is where the Ciaz can be differentiated from the other Maruti cars.

There are four variants available on the petrol and diesel engines. These are Sigma,Delta, Zeta and Alpha. All these variants are available on the Ciaz, and there shall even be an automatic on the petrol and yes the RS version for the diesel. The prices haven’t been shared yet, we will share the new updated prices as the company releases them.
On the inside, the Ciaz looks so upmarket. The plastic quality, the fit and finish make it feel premium. The touch and feel of the materials is also better than all other Maruti cars. The black and beige interiors look good and the interiors are soft touch. The Ciaz’s dashboard layout is simple and functional. There are all the features one needs and it is very simple to use them. A large touchscreen system dominates the centre console and then there is also climate control. The instrument cluster is easy to read as well. There is a neatly integrated driver information system as well.
The front seats are comfortable. The rear seats lack the thigh support but are extremely spacious. There is more than sufficient space for rear passengers be it knee room or head room, however what goes missing the comfort. The seats could have been a bit more supportive for tall passengers. The boot size is also large enough on the 2017 Ciaz, making it good to be used for a weekend for a family of four.
|Petrol Engine||1.5-litre/1.4-litre petrol|
|Transmission||5-speed manual, CVT|

A 1.4-litre petrol engine powers the Ciaz. This produces about 90bhp of power and is an oversquare engine. Which means it will have good torque even at low engine speeds. This means that there will be sufficient punch from the engine even when driving at low speeds in city traffic. The engine is silent and it has more than sufficient power to be driven in city and even to comfortably cruise on the highway. At the same time, the engine has very low NVH levels, making it a highly refined engine. This engine comes with five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmission options. There could be a 1.5-litre petrol engine. We aren’t certain yet. Maruti doesn’t have any other products to share this engine with, and hence we aren’t sure if this engine will be used for the new Ciaz.
This is followed by a new 1.5-litre diesel engine that will produce about 120bhp of power and 250Nm of maximum torque. This engine is also used on other Maruti cars also. This engine comes with SHVS technology (which is basically mild hybrid). This is a start-stop technology that will start and stop a car in traffic, and then when you brake, the braking heat is converted into electric energy and stored in a battery. This improves the engine’s efficiency and increases the cars mileage also. This engine will come only with a five-speed manual transmission.

The Ciaz petrol isn’t the most efficient engine as it returns about 10km/l in the city (for the manual) and about 14km/l on the highway. At the same time, the automatic has a mileage of about 9km/l in the city and close to 13km/l on the highway. At the same time, the diesel engine is high on mileage. In city it will return about 16km/l and on the highway it has an efficiency close to 20km/l.
The New Maruti Ciaz 2017 will be competing with the new Honda City 2017, new Hyundai Verna 2017, Volkswagen Vento facelift, Skoda Rapid and the Fiat Linea 125S. These will be the direct competition to the Ciaz, however, the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Honda WR-V, Tata Nexon will be competing products offered in the same price bracket.
