Buying a new car is a hectic task. People do a lot of research before buying their next car. The first question you face while buying a car is petrol or diesel. With the upcoming emission norms, people are scared to invest in diesel engines. So should your next car be a diesel? In today’s article, let’s find out.

Upcoming emission norms

The Indian government is tightening the emission norms of all cars. It implemented the BS6 norms in April 2020. Now the government is bringing stage 2 of these norms in April 2022. With these new regulations, vehicles will come with OBD devices. These new devices will need to maintain actual emissions and not just some occasional tests. The government is also looking to discard older diesel engines which can become a big problem.

Diesel cars- Power & Refinement

Diesel engines produce more torque giving them higher pulling power. Coming to the refinement, diesel engines have improved a lot. But still, diesel engines have some amount of clutter and rumbling noise leading to high NVH levels.

Mileage

Mileage is something that has always been dearer to an average Indian customer. Also, with the rising fuel prices, it has become even more important. When it comes to mileage, diesel engines are better than petrol engines.

Diesel cars- Service and maintenance

Service and maintenance are other important points to consider. Diesel engines are more complex than their petrol counterparts. This complexity leads to an expensive service bill. Also, diesel engine parts are more expensive. But mostly, diesel engine cars are built to last and have very low stress. Many diesel engines can tick over a lakh kilometers and still feel brand new.

So should you buy a diesel car?

This depends on a lot of factors. For now, diesel engines are safe, so it shouldn’t be a problem. But you have to keep in mind the upcoming restrictions that affect the resale value. Other than that, diesel engines offer great mileage and performance. The cost of buying a diesel car is much higher initially than a petrol car. Also another thing to keep in mind is – one should only buy a diesel car if your running is high and ranges above 50km to 80km daily.
