Mahindra has been on a roll in India. It is doing a proper brand upliftment with an updated logo and updated models. The XUV700 is the first vehicle to get this new treatment. Recently, it also won our ‘Car Of The Year’ award, which clearly reflected its success. But one thing that has remained common in Mahindra is how the brand names its cars. In today’s article, we will see the story behind Mahindra’s car names.

Obsession with ‘O’

Mahindra car names

Majority of Mahindra cars end with an ‘O’ – Bolero, Scorpio, Xylo & Verito. Even cars like the XUV500, XUV700 & others are pronounced with double ‘oh’. So the primary reason behind this nomenclature is superstition. Mahindra’s first two cars, the Scorpio and Bolero found great success, so Mahindra thought it to be lucky and decided to name all its vehicles based on it. It also gives uniformity to the naming scheme.

XUV & TUV nomenclature

Mahindra car names

In cars like the XUV700, XUV500, XUV300; the X stands for Generation X. The UV stands for a utility vehicle. The 700, 500 & 300 stands for the series. In the same way for TUV: T stands for tough and the UV stands for a utility vehicle, making it a tough utility vehicle. The K in the KUV series is for kool making it a Kool Utility Vehicle.

Mahindra’s future cars

Mahindra car names

Currently, Mahindra is working on the new-generation Scorpio, which will follow the same pattern. Then we can expect Mahindra to focus on its born electric cars. We expect Mahindra’s born EVs to also come with similar nomenclature.
