The decision has been taken by UT administration to boost people to purchase more battery-operated vehicles for both environment safety as well as to opt for other energy than the diesel and petrol.

The plan was mooted out by science and technology wing of the Chandigarh administration few months ago, when their director Santosh Kumar had written to Chandigarh administration in this regard.

Kumar in a detailed letter had requested UT to exempt VAT from battery-operated vehicles, so that it can give a kind of boost to people to opt for such vehicles. It is still unclear if this policy will also be applicable for hybrid powered vehicles.

He had said that the concept is quite feasible for a city like Chandigarh, which is small in jurisdiction and for city usage, people can easily afford to take battery-operated vehicles.

It was also told that as the cost of battery-operated vehicles is high than other vehicles, such moves are must to bring people forward to go for battery-operated vehicles in the city, so that diesel and petrol vehicles could be used less.
