Upcoming budget electric cars for India

India is currently witnessing an electric vehicle boom. The government is also supporting the sales of electric vehicles by providing subsidies and tax credits. People here are showing their interest in electric vehicles as well. Keeping this in mind, manufacturers are planning to bring in some affordable budget segment electric vehicles in the coming time. So, here are some upcoming budget category electric cars one can buy in India under Rs 10 lakhs.

Maruti WagonR EV

Maruti WagonR has been one of the most favourite family cars in India. This hatchback has consecutively been on the list of top selling Indian cars. So, the company is planning to bring the electric vehicle based on WagonR in the coming time. The car was even spotted testing some months ago. We expect a range of close to 250km on a full charge. Charging time is expected to be around 7hrs to full charge and with DC fast charging, it is expected to charge 80 percent in an hour. Talking about the price, we expect it to be launched under Rs 10 lakhs.

Upcoming budget electric cars – Renault K-ZE

The Renault K-ZE would be based on the current generation Renault Kwid. The global version makes 43bhp & 125Nm of torque. It gets a 26.8kWh battery pack that takes four hours to fully charge from a slow charger. And with fast DC charging, it charges 30 to 80 percent in half-hour. We expect similar specs to follow to India as well. We expect a range of close to 200km on a single charge.

Mahindra eKUV100

Mahindra has always shown great interest in the electric car market. Mahindra was one of the initial brands to bring out an electric vehicle in the country, which we knew as the ‘Reva’. Currently, we expect the brand to launch a few electric cars in the coming years. The first on the latest list is expected to be the entry-level electric eKUV100. It would be completely based on their KUV100 in terms of looks and dimensions. It would be powered by a 40kW motor with a battery pack of 15.9kWh. The powertrain would be 40bhp & 120Nm torque. The AC charger would take around 6hrs for charging it completely and with DC fast charging, it will charge from 0-80 percent in an hour. It is expected to launch in India at a price tag of around Rs 9 lakhs. 

Upcoming budget electric cars – Tata Tiago EV

Tata is already manufacturing electric cars – the Nexon EV and the Tigor EV. Very soon, we expect to see the electric version of the Tata Tiago as well. The car was showcased during the Auto Expo 2020. We expect it to be Tata’s budget electric car that would be priced lower than their Tigor EV.
